General Finishes Milk Paint Vs Miss Mustard Seeds Milk Paint
As we mentioned before, General Finishes milk paint is not really a milk paint at all so it stands to reason that it performs differently than traditional milk paint.
Miss Mustard Seeds Milk Paint is made from natural ingredients including milk protein making it a true milk paint. It has to be mixed as it comes in a powder. It also requires a bonding agent if you dont want a chippy, rustic look.
General Finishes Milk Paint is premixed and requires a primer on slick surfaces where as Miss Mustard Seeds Milk Paint requires a bonding agent to be mixed in. GF milk paint gives a more consistent, predictable finish than traditional milk paint and will only chip if you use vaseline in between paint layers. Also, General Finishes Milk Paint is a more durable product.
In terms of sheen and color options, GF Milk Paint has 30 different colors to choose from and they have the same vintage feel as MMSs color options. GF Milk Paint is similar in sheen to the matte look of traditional milk paint.
General Finishes Milk Paint is easier to use than Miss Mustard Seeds Milk Paint as there is no mixing involved and you get a more consistent, durable finish. GF Milk Paint is more expensive per quart but the price is probably about the same as it covers much better than traditional milk paint.
What Is General Finishes Milk Paint
But General Finishes Milk Paint is not really a milk paint. In fact, the only thing it has in common with milk paint is its name. It is much closer chemically to the latex paints you will find at your big box store than Miss Mustard Seeds Milk Paint?
So why is it called milk paint?
Here is what General Finishes has to say, GFs Milk Paint is not a true Milk Paint it is premixed and does not contain any casein-based ingredients. We named our product Milk Paint with the intention of putting a clear, bright, contemporary spin on an old fashioned furniture paint tradition. It is designed to mimic the low luster finish of old world paints. It is our premium paint, carefully engineered for durability, ease of application and exterior use.
I have to admit I was a little caught off guard when I found out that there is no actual milk paint in General Finishes Milk Paint. As they say above, it is only called milk paint because the sheen and color options are similar in appearance to traditional milk paint.
But as I thought about it more, if they need to call a paint by a different name in order to get a good product in more peoples hands, then that isnt such a bad thing!
General Finishes Milk Paint is more technicially a latex paint, using the same type of chemicals you mind find in a big box store to paint walls. Both use acrylic resins but not all acrylic resins are created equal.

What Is Milk Paint
Before we discuss General Finishes Milk Paint, it is important to define terms. In my last post, I compared milk paint, chalk paint and latex paint. Milk paint has been around for years all the way back to colonial times and is known for its all-natural ingredients, which include limestone, clay and milk protein casein.
Traditional milk paint penetrates the layers of the wood on unfinished pieces working like a stain in many cases. Traditional milk paint allows for a lot of creativity in furniture painting because it can create an authentic, chippy look. In most cases, milk paint comes in a powdered form that has to be mixed with water and/or a bonding agent when you are ready to paint.

How To Use A Paint Sample The Right Way
Paint samples come in either liquid form as testers or in solid form as swatches. Paint samples or testers are bottles of liquid paint ranging from 2 ounces to 8 ounces that are applied directly to your wall or to a piece of white foam board or scrap drywall.
Do not apply to bare cardboard, as this is too absorbent. Solid paint swatches are thick paper squares or rectangles representing paint colors. These come either loose or bound as palettes in graduated form.
Liquid paint samples allow you to use disposable foam brushes or rollers, or even real brushes, to apply sample paint to your walls. Create a coverage box with painter’s tape and stay within that box as you apply the sample.
With 8-ounce paint samples, you have 1/16th of the volume of a gallon of paint. Since a gallon of paint typically covers 400 square feet, with an 8-ounce sample you can cover as much as 25 square feet. Read the instructions on the tester, as some paint samples only cover about 16 square feet.
For a one-wall application such as an accent wall, you will be able to create a 5-foot by 5-foot square of test paint. For entire rooms, it is beneficial to coat all four walls because of shifting natural light during the day and artificial light at night. This amounts to about 6 1/4 square feet of test paint per wall .

How Do You Pick Colors Online
One of the biggest hesitations people have about buying paint online is how to make a decision when you can’t see the color in person. Many paint retailers have tried to make the paint buying process even easier by introducing tech-driven solutions to help you make the right choice. Many brands, like Sherwin-Williams and Behr, have virtual “try on” studios where you can visualize the paint in your room through an app. In a sense, this actually helps you picture your new paint color in a room better than if you went to the store and looked at a sample.
Additionally, some retailers even offer color-matching technology to help take the guesswork out of the paint buying process. This is especially helpful if you’re matching preexisting paint on your walls. For example, ColorSmart by Behr allows you to upload a picture of your room to its app, which will automatically match the paint color for you.

Where Can I Buy Car Paint
The color and finish go hand in hand to produce the look youre chasing. If you want something simple but with some shine, gloss is the way to go. You can also knock the shine down by opting for satin or matte paints. Pearlescent coats are always an option for those who really want those body lines to work their magic. Its hard to describe the exact textures you can achieve with finishes, so you will want to look around for visual representations to find what youre after.
Before you get your heart set on any shade, consider what type of paint will be best for your situation. Consult our paint type section above for reference. Will you be transporting the vehicle outside and in the elements for most of its life? You should probably choose a two-stage paint. If you want to stick to the original finish, single-stage will likely give you the results youre looking for.

Automotive Paint: Urethane Vs Acrylic
Urethane paints are an industry standard for automotive paint, and for the past two decades have mostly replaced acrylic paints as the best car paint and automakers preferred choice. Although it is difficult to replicate authentic factory paint nowadays, and neither acrylic nor urethane paint offers that option, many car restorers argue that urethane provides a nicer-looking finish. Urethane paint is the most durable auto paint and is also chip-resistantwhen properly maintained, a coat of urethane paint will outlast most acrylic paints.
Acrylic paints are generally water-based. This means the resin adheres to the product using water as its primary agent, whereas polyurethane paints often depend on a solvent. In this sense, water-based acrylic paint is far less toxic than urethane. Hardeners and other added chemicals are unnecessary, so acrylic paint is ready to go directly from the can. The application process, however, is slightly different than urethane, as acrylic paint tends to emerge in smaller droplets. Acrylic lacquer auto paints can be costlier than acrylic enamels. The drying process is much slower than urethane paints and leaving a coat to sit for 24 to 48 hours before applying another coat is recommended.
Types Of Paint For Metal
You can buy paint for metals that are just like any other can of paint. These traditional paint options are solid both online and at local hardware or home improvement stores, and they come in quart cans so you can tackle items with small or large surface areas. Traditional paint for metals is often able to be used on several different items, from walls indoors and outdoors to furniture to metal surfaces.
Oil-Based Metal Paint
Oil-based paint is typically seen as the gold standard when it comes to covering metal surfaces and items. Thats because oil-based paints tend to adhere better to metal, offering a more long-lasting coat of color or finish. And unlike water-based alternatives, oil-based paints for metal dont include any water at all, which can help offer better long-term rust protection and prevention.
Water-Based Metal Paint
Water-based paints tend to be thinner and less durable when it comes to metal surfaces and items, but you shouldnt rule them out entirely. Some water-based paints can deliver great metal coverage and solid adhesion. Just make sure youre picking out a paint thats specifically formulated for metal surfaces otherwise, it may not stick and wind up peeling away.

The Best Way To Apply General Finishes Milk Paint
I followed the same process below for my desk in General Finishes Halcyon Blue. Heres the before picture:
- Prep your surface by lightly sanding to help your furniture pieces surface to accept paint. Sand with a sandpaper grit of 150.
- There are detailed instructions on the General Finishes site about properly cleaning the furniture piece for painting but you can bypass all these steps by priming it with a good primer like this one.
- After you have primed your piece, let it dry 2 hours. Now its time to paint. General Finishes Milk Paint can be applied with a primer or roller. Paint in long strokes with the wood grain.
- Your piece will require at least 2 coats depending on the color. Be sure to let each coat dry at least 2 hours.
- For pieces with medium to heavy use, apply three thin layers of clear coat letting it dry at least two hours in between. I like applying top coat with a foam brush for a smooth finish.
- After you last coat of top coat has dried, be sure to use your furniture piece lightly until it has cured for 21 days.
