How To Paint Wood Furniture
Gone are the days of hastily assembled flatpack and cookie-cutter interiors. Today, interior design is all about personality and character. Antique and vintage stores are a treasure trove of beautiful pieces of furniture that you won’t find anywhere else. However, these vintage gems often need a little TLC to bring them up to scratch or sometimes need a change of color to suit your look.
‘Colorful furniture has made a huge resurgence over the last few years, but it has been hard to find exciting colored cabinetry outside of the bespoke sector,’ says Claire Hornby, head of creative at Barker and Stonehouse . Learning how to paint wood furniture gives you the opportunity to create a piece full of color and character that perfectly complements your interior scheme.
Thats where the painted furniture revolution comes to the fore. Learning how to paint wood furniture can transform a boring brown dresser that’s otherwise destined for landfill into the hero of your sustainable kitchen ideas.
In addition to creating characterful pieces for your home, learning how to paint wooden furniture will also save you money as lots of these antiques sell for a song, and also know that youre doing your bit for the planet, repurposing rather than buying new.
Protects Mold And Mildew
Another good thing is that this paint contains substances that are meant to fight mold and mildew. This makes it great for wood in wetter areas that would normally be quite prone to mold/mildew issues. If this paint resists mold and mildew as well as advertised, it wouldnt be a bad choice for your next bathroom job.
The Key For How To Paint Furniture Without Sanding: Prime
The next step is to prime!
Im always asked, Do I need to prime furniture before painting? And the answer isnt exactly straight forward.
For this method, yes you do. But I will share a few other methods at the end of this article that dont require a priming step!
Best Primers for Painting Wood Without Sanding
Since I am using a latex paint, a quality bonding primer is necessary. Latex paint is versatile since it comes in many finishes and colors, but it isnt the most durable option for furniture.
So priming first will ensure a long lasting finish.
For this piece, I used oil based because it was what I had on hand. I traditionally like to work with water based paints for easy clean up but oil based is a great option as well!
One thing to look out for is that your primer works with TSP. Some primers say not to use TSP prior because it cannot adhere to a piece that has been cleaned this way. So make sure to read your labels to avoid heart ache down the road.
Painting Over Stained Wood Before Sanding
Painting over stained wood is so easy that you dont need to sand it first. Sanding is tiring and, most of the time, frustrating. This will save a lot of time when you dont have to sand your wood surface before repainting it.
What you need to do is to clean the surface properly and choose the right primer. It will prevent you from sanding and stripping stained furniture.
However, if your furniture is peeled, you might need to lightly sand the areas. Not the entire surface, just the peeled stain. Just because you dont have to sand doesnt mean you dont need enough preparation.
The wood surface has to be cleaned with a chemical cleaner first to remove any grease residue from the surface. Using a chemical cleaner helps primer to adhere pretty well.
The best primer for this project is bonding primer. It needs only one coat, which is great for sealing water stains. It is ideal for almost any wood, glass, tile, and metal surface.
When applied, bonding primer usually looks blotchy, and the stain will come through. It is not designed to cover stains but to let the paint adhere properly.
Although blotchy and unattractive, it will still provide a nice finish to your wood surface.
Even when sometimes you have to sand your wood surface because the finish is laminate, high-gloss, or melamine, you dont have to sand. Just rough up the wood surface.
Remove Drawers And Hardware
First things first, start by removing drawers, loose shelves, and hardware from your furniture. If you want to paint the interior, this is also the time to remove the back of your piece, if possible. “If you see screws on the inside front of a drawer box, the drawer may have a removable front piece that’ll be easier to paint than the entire drawer,” says McCoy. “So remove the screws to see if the front can be lifted free. If you have more than one drawer with a detachable front, make sure to label the fronts and drawers to help with reassembly.“

Choosing The Right Brush For Painting Wood Furniture
An often overlooked element, the right brush can make or break your project. When starting to research how to paint wood furniture, brushes are a key consideration.
There are different schools of thought on brushes, and it really depends on the type of paint you are using. For milk paint, which is water based and quite thin, synthetic bristles or a blend is better as they absorb less water meaning more paint ends up on the surface being painted, and stops the paint drying out too much on the brush. A slanted synthetic brush will give a great finish with milk paint or any thin water based paint,’ says Carolyn Moore, owner of Old Fashioned Milk Paint .
‘However, some of the thicker mineral/chalk paints will work better with a thicker natural bristle brush, even a round brush often used for waxing, as they hold more paint, meaning fewer dips in the paint and therefore fewer brush marks. If you are planning a lot of painting, look for a good quality brush the best you can afford, to avoid annoying bristle shedding and ensure they stay in shape following repeated uses.’

Choosing The Best Deck Paint
Now that you have decided to paint your deck, you need to choose the right type of deck paint that will suit your project. Another factor you have to consider is whether to use oil- or acrylic-based paint.
We suggest that if you have painted or stained your deck before, you stick with what has already been applied. This means that if you have used an acrylic- or oil-based paint or stain, you stay with that specific choice. These two types of paint do not go very well together and could result in a total mess, in which case you may then need to remove the old finish completely and apply a new one, which could cost you. For example, applying an oil-based paint over a water-based paint will ruin your end-result.
Prime The Wood For Paint
Priming is generally recommended. It helps the paint adhere to the wood, and can even help protect the older paint color from the newer one if you’re not completely stripping it. The one exception would be if you don’t want a full opaque effect, Mundwiller says.
- Using a brush or roller and, moving with the grain, apply a thin layer of primer.
- Allow it to dry completely before applying the paint.
- If any gaps remain, sand them and add a second cont of primer. Oil-based primers are good for sealing the porous surface of the wood.
