Watercolor Fundamental #: Lifting Off Paint With Watercolors
This is another good trick to know when you are learning how to watercolor. Once you paint an area, you can easily take a dry brush or even a paper towel to lift off some of the paint.
This can be used to make some areas lighter, or you can even have fun with different mark making designs, such as polka dots or stripes!
Once you get down these basic fundamentals for watercolors and the main watercolor techniques, you are ready to start with even more fun watercolor painting techniques!
Gather The Following Supplies:
- Watercolor brushes: get a medium, small size, and a flat brush. They will be used to create different effects when painting.
- Watercolor paper: Paper will make a big difference in the outcome. We use Canson XL series in this tutorial.
- Drawing reference: you can find any tulip flower online in order to copy the tutorial.
- Watercolor Paints: White Nights is the brand that will be used in this tutorial.
- Pencil: Best to use H, or 2H, making sure you do not have any bright lines.
- Water jug: This can be anything, even an old cup.
- Tissue paper: Grab your kitchen roll.
- Eraser: Make sure that it is white and does not leave any marks. We are using STAEDTLER Mars.
Lifting From Wet Watercolors
If your paints still wet, its easy to remove pigment. Blot your brush thoroughly and touch it to the paint to lift it back off the paper. The trick here is that the damp-but-blotted brush absorbs more water than it releases, so itll quickly pick the wet color up from your painting.
Another option is to use a paper towel or tissue paper to lift the pigment. These tools can be the better choice if youre going for a more abstract, less controlled white space. If you want more control, use a brush.

Creating Soft Texture With Salt
Salt soaks water and produces interesting textures.
Sprinkle some salt over your painting when it is still wet.
The salt will make some areas lighter.
This method is an excellent technique for adding variety to a flower field or bark of a tree.
Then, you can become a fashion designer with watercolors.
Draw models wearing different styles of dresses.
Design the dresses with gradient and ombre techniques.
You may add various patterns using colorful markers.
Be creative and create unique gowns.
Adding Texture With Salt
When salt is sprinkled on a wet wash, it starts to gather the watercolor pigments and makes the coolest texture. The effect will vary depending on the size of the grains of salt and the wetness of the paper, so experiment on scraps of watercolor paper before you commit on your final painting. Once the paint is dry, simply brush off the excess salt.

Fuzzy Birds Wet On Wet Painting Idea
One of the best known wet-on-wet techniques involves dampening the surface of your watercolor paper before you apply a layer of paint. Hence the name wet-on-wet because youre applying wet paint to a wet surface.
This technique is ideal for painting these fuzzy watercolor birds.
And you can pretty much just paint any shape you like and see what kind of results turn up !
Start by taping down your sheet of paper onto a flat board. This will help the paper to stay flatter when you apply water.
The first step is to brush the whole surface of the sheet using clear water. For this I use a large hake brush. A big brush like this is ideal for adding large amounts of water or paint quickly.
Keep brushing the surface with vertical and horizontal brush strokes to make sure the whole sheet is evenly dampened.
Mix up a bright color from your palette and start painting an oval shape. Notice how quickly the paint spreads outwards when the paper is very wet. Add some more paint to the center of your shape to strengthen the color.
One of the attributes of wet-on-wet painting is that the paint tends to appear lighter than wet-on-dry techniques after drying because the surface water dilutes the paint slightly.
Mix another bright color and paint a second shape. Work quickly so that the surface of the paper is still damp and the pigments disperse on the surface.
Leave the paint to dry completely before moving on. To add the details of the beak and the eyes I used some white gouache. .

There are basically two ways to paint with watercolors. Wet on wet and wet on dry. Both have different uses & yes, you can even use them both together!

Another important thing to practice is how to layer with watercolors. Learning how to layer with watercolors is what can really help give the things you paint some more depth and interest. Learning to layer is what really makes watercolors look fantastic on paper!
When layering, you want to start with the lightest colors first. This way, you can keep building upon those lighter colors until you get the results you want.
Its important to know that watercolors WILL become reactivated once dry if you paint over them with water again. This is really helpful to know, because if you are not careful you can easily muddy up the paints together and get some not-so-fantastic results.
This is a good way to also add shadows in your paintings. With watercolor, creating highlights is done a bit differently rather than paint the highlights like you might when working with acrylic paints, its usually best to simply leave those spots blank.
You can experiment a lot when you are practicing on layering and blending the watercolors on paper. You can also experiment with this by combining different wet on wet and wet on dry techniques.

Build your values up layer by layer to arrive at the effect you want. This does take a lot of planning but the results will be worth it.

This technique involves painting around a certain shape with a darker color. So, you are only painting within the negative space and the main composition or subject of the painting. For this technique, you can use masking tape or fluid for sharper edges, and it also helps to prevent the paint from bleeding into the space. What Are Warm And Cool Colors
In general, a warm color has a bit of yellow or red in it and appears to move towards you.
A cool color has a bluish tinge and appears to move away from you.
Whether a color is considered warm or cool depends on how it compares to other colors within the painting. For example, green could be considered a cooler color within a primarily yellow painting, however, it could be considered a warmer colour compared with blue.
Exercise: Keep an apple near the window. Paint it using cooler orange for shadows and a warm orange for the sunlight side. Mix a dot of blue in the red for a cooler tinge. And, mix a dot yellow for the highlight.
