Go Deeper With Layering
Acrylic paint dries quickly, so you can easily add thin layers on top of dry background layers when you want to add more detail to any parts of a painting. Professional artists often use thin layers of paint to create underpaintings, which are essentially sketches of the artwork youre going to paint.
These layers also add depth and color to your finish painting, like deeper shadows or more pronounced highlights. Try a warm underpainting with a common acrylic paint color like burnt sienna or a cool underpainting with ultramarine blue .
How Do I Set Up My Workspace
Choose a location with plenty of light and where you can keep your materials within easy reach.
You are going to need a flat surface for your palette and water, support for your canvas, and a place to rest your brushes between uses.
I paint at a standing easel and I have a cart on my side holding my brushes, palette, water, and rags.
Splatter Your Acrylic Paints
Ready to have some fun? Load a brush with paint and fling it at the canvas. The splattering effect lets you create natural-looking splashes and explosions, or express movement. It can also be used to make texture for starry skies, sand and dirt, and more.
Some artists thin down the paint before pouring or splattering it onto the canvas. You can use a sponge or rag and see how the spray changes. If you dont mind a little dripping, keep your canvas upright while you try this technique. Otherwise, lay it down flat.

To start, I recommend a few synthetic sable flats, approximately 1, ½, and ¼, and a small round brush for details.
My starting brush set was by Royal and Langnickel, and Ive been very happy with it. They are of good quality and not too expensive.
Tip: Use big brushes at the beginning, keep the small brushes for final details.

Get The Workspace Ready
Before starting it is important to have all of your equipment set up and ready to go. Start by setting up your canvas. This should be propped up somehow using an easel is best. Then make sure to have two jars of water at the ready. One should be used for cleaning off your brushes, and the other one for diluting the paints. Many artists like to have a misting spray bottle available too. This is to keep their painting wet to stop it from drying too quickly.

Use Before & After Studies
Try drawing with your paintbrushes. On one side, draw a tight object, in this case its a coffee cup. Once you have the tight version done, draw a looser version on the left. You can do this over-and-over.
To make it more abstract, draw the first tight version even looser and loser. And no matter how abstract it is, make the second version even more expressive.
In the example below, the version in the left is tight, and the right is loose.
Start with simple subjects
How Much Water Do I Need
Acrylic paint is water-soluble, so its important to have water handy at all times for adding to the paint while mixing just a little bit and to rinse the brushes.
I like to use a plastic container with a wide opening that holds one liter of water or more.
To keep your water from getting muddy quickly, wipe the extra paint off your brush on a paper towel before rinsing it. The paint will dry to plastic on the paper reducing environmental and waterways contamination.
Another thing to keep handy is a water spray bottle, to prevent fast drying of the paint blobs on the palette.

Do I Need Acrylic Medium
There is a huge range of different acrylic mediums out there, they are designed to improve the paint performance or to create some kind of special effect.
I recommend that you get familiar with the acrylic paint before you buy any mediums because it depends on what you feel youd like to improve.
Some of the mediums are for increasing the drying time, for making the paint glossy, making it thick, create texture, or improve the flow. You can improve the flow simply by adding water to the paint.
Another way to use an acrylic medium is to add to high-quality paint to extend the amount. Medium is less expensive than paint, and high-pigment paint can be mixed with a lot of medium without losing its qualities.
The Unique Characteristics Of Acrylic Paint

Acrylics are an awesome painting medium for beginners and professionals alike because they are water-based, do not smell, come in all kinds of colors and thicknesses, and they dry very quickly allowing easy correction of mistakes.
Heavy body acrylics handle similar to oils but being water-based they are easier to work with and to clean up. Unlike watercolors, undiluted acrylics are pretty opaque and make easy to paint in layers and cover mistakes.
Acrylic paint is made of pigments in a polymer emulsion, simply put its a colorful plastic. All paints, gels, mediums, and varnishes are basically the same polymer plastic substance, but with different weights, viscosity and thicknesses. This is why they are all compatible.
Things to consider when buying acrylic paint all info is on the tubes. The different types can be mixed and combined.

Examples Of Abstract Painting Styles And Subjects
There are many different abstract painting styles that an artist can explore. Some of the most common abstract styles include:
Abstract acrylic painting
Abstract expressionism example
In this painting, the subject is a still life, but its interpreted very loosely. What makes it work is the high contrast of the yellow tablecloth against the darker background. To make it interesting, smaller and medium sized shapes are added. These would be the tea cups, pitcher, bottle and chairs.

Non-representational abstract
Another example of a non-abstract painting by Cy Twombly. It illustrates the importance of color, contrast, large and small shapes, values and more. A great artist to explore if you prefer this style.
Start Drawing On A Tinted Canvas
I used to draw first and then apply a tinted background for my painting. The problem with that is that the paint smudges your drawing and it can make details hard to see.
I learned to tint the canvas first and then draw my layout. Its much easier this way.
You can pick any ground color that complements your composition. When in doubt, I usually paint a diluted base of yellow ochre on the whole canvas. It provides the painting a vibrant undertone and it helps me avoid the feeling of artists block in front of a white canvas.

Allow Your Canvas Dry
Since acrylic paint is fast drying, it usually wont need a lot of time to dry. Also, the drying time will depend on the medium you mix with the acrylic, which usually slows the drying process. After you are done with painting, make sure you keep your canvas in a safe spot to dry. Even if it is a small canvas, the slightest touch can tamper with your finished work if the paint is still wet. The best place to keep your finished work is on a non-stick surface to protect your paintwork.
How To Make Your Own Homemade Playdough
Learn to check the pigments listed on the tubes. You’ll see that several colors have phthalo inside, like Windsor blue and other blues. That makes them pretty strong in color mixes. At first, phthalo blue really messed me up. But that was my fault because I did not know how to handle it.
It’s actually a wonderful pigment when used in small quantities, and it’s amazingly flexible, very useful in many color mixes. However, I pretty much never use it pure, right out of the tube. Only mix it with some kind of orange to dull it as needed.
Big brushes are best when painting big areas or using a loose painting style. Small brushes are best for small areas and details. The brush in the photo is small in general, but can be considered big in relation to this small canvas.

Choosing Your Subject And Composing It
Start with simple subjects, such as still lifes, before undertaking more complex compositions . To compose your subject, follow your intuition! Here are a few tricks to get you started:
- -Rule of thirds. Divide your medium, horizontally and vertically, into three equal rows, then position the important elements of the picture near those lines: a simple but effective technique!
- -Choosing the format. “Landscape” , creates the impression of space “portrait” , gives the impression of intimacy “panorama” , produces a panoramic view when square, it draws the eye to the center of the picture.
Create Your Tonal Background
Apart from using the gesso to soften the surface of the canvas, you can also apply an all-over tone to set the mood of your work surface. Most times, painting on the white surface of the canvas wont set the right mood if you are targeting a particular image. For instance, if you intend to set the tone of stormy weather, the white background of the canvas wont echo that tone. You need to give the canvas a light bluish-gray background to create that stormy mood you want to start working with.
