What Are Acrylic Paints
Before we dive into how to paint with acrylics, its important to first discuss what acrylic paint is and how it differs from other media.
Acrylic paints are basically pigments suspended in a water-soluble acrylic polymer media that becomes water-resistant when dry, says Gary Griffin, an artist based in Houston, Texas. The advantages of working with acrylics versus other media types is that they are fast-drying, easy to clean up, have low odor, and are heavily pigmented, meaning the colors can be very bold and vibrant.
Compared to oil paints, which can take a full day or longer to completely dry, acrylic paints dry within minutes. Unlike oils, you can continue to paint over the dried areas and not see any mistakes, hence its a very appealing medium for beginners, notes Camilla Webster, a painter whose work is featured in museums and exhibits across the world.
Some other important factors to know about acrylic paints: they typically dry a darker hue than the pigment they exhibit when wet, they do not spread , they dry very quickly , theyre water-soluble when wet, and they are water-resistant when dry which means that once dry, they cannot be altered.
The beauty of working with acrylics is that they are relatively inexpensive and easy to work with but can provide really amazing results in the hands of a creative artist.

Best Palette For Acrylic Painting

If you have issues with fast-drying acrylic paint and you want to make it dry slower, you definitely can use the stay-wet palette by Masterson Sta-Wet Premier Palette. You can always use normal palettes: plastic palettes are the most popular and cheap.
I dont really like palettes with wells, because it is so uncomfortable to use! I prefer a flat surface as a palette, where I can easily mix paint and there will be not much paint left, as it often happens with wells.
However, you should make your own choice, try the standard palette, e.i. Plastic Well Paint Tray, or just make your homemade one ð
Another option is to make your palette with a piece of cardboard, an empty plastic container, or a tray. I also know some artists who use a piece of tile as a palette or make their palette from clay. For me, personally, these types of palettes are too heavy.

Acrylics are water-based, which means that unlike oil paints, they can be thinned with water and cleaned with water. They are also non-toxic and non-smelly. For the eco- or health-conscious, this makes acrylics a more attractive option. Acrylic paints can mimic the quality of oil paints, but without the toxicity and clean-up issues that go along with oils. When thinned with lots of water, acrylics can also mimic the qualities of watercolor.
Acrylic paint dries quickly. This can have its advantages and disadvantages. For one thing, painting with acrylics is great if you like to work quickly. It is also very easy to “go over” if you’ve made a mistake. The main disadvantage of the quick drying time is that sometimes it can be difficult to blend colors, but this can be remedied by using Open Acrylics or by mixing in an acrylic medium, like retarder or wetting agent .
Acrylic mediums can also be used to alter the sheen of the paint, causing them to have high gloss or matte sheens. There are many enticing gels, mediums and pastes on the market to mix with acrylics to enhance and alter the quaility of the paint.
Pick The Right Canvas
Pick only canvasses with the exact weight of 8 to 10 oz. This is important because you need to know that heavier-weight canvasses are better, and they offer more quality paintings in the first place.
The heavier the canvas is, the better the canvas will be. Also, it will provide better results. Besides that, the weight of the canvas is determined by the thread density, which directly affects the texture in the following ways.
- Smooth texture is the result of higher density thread count.
- Heavier canvasses are equipped with more wood pieces that are located across the back.
- For beginners, canvas boards are the best option.

Materials Needed & The Best Acrylic Paint Brands
The bare-bones essentials for acrylic painting include a palette, a palette knife for blending, brushes that are marked as approved for acrylic paint, a canvas , a rag or paper towels, and then soap and water for cleanup. An easel will also come in handy.
Like anything, youll find there are variations in the quality of materials available to you. As a beginner, Webster recommends sticking with lower-cost or student grade materials versus professional grade, noting that you can even ask for an art store clerk to point you in the right direction.
Both grades are good, she says, but student grade will be less expensive and great for practicing or exploring new subjects and colors as a beginner. As you begin to feel more confident in your acrylic painting skill set, you can upgrade to higher quality products.
Acrylic Paintings: Make Your Walls Stand Out With Modern Artwork
In the 1900s, the first usable acrylic resin was discovered at a chemical company in Germany. Acrylic resin quickly transformed into an all-purpose paint as it combined the properties of oil and watercolours, giving birth to a new and improved pigment formula. In the early years of its discovery, acrylic resin was primarily utilised for industrial purposes. However, in the mid 20th century, several artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and more, started using acrylic paints as an artistic medium. Taking inspiration from these legends, many painters embraced acrylic as a medium, and soon ushered the era of commercial acrylic artwork.
One of the best features of acrylic colour paintings is that they are long-lasting and do not wear off easily, even with moderate light exposure. Due to their artistic texture and appeal, acrylic paintings have now become a significant part of home decor, museums collections and art galleries. With that said, Pisarto is an online art gallery where you can shop paintings at attractive prices. Our platform also allows different artists to showcase their work and reach a wider audience. Can You Draw On Canvas Before Oil Painting
Yes, you can draw on canvas before oil painting. In fact, this is a great way to get started with oil painting. You can sketch your composition on the canvas before adding any paint, and this will help you to make sure that your final product is exactly what you want it to be. You can use a regular pencil, charcoal, or even acrylic paint to sketch onto the canvas before oils.
Misting: How To Stop Acrylics From Drying Out
Acrylics dry quickly sometimes too quickly. One way to keep paints moist easily is to mist them with water when you’re acrylic painting. You can buy gardening misters at hardware or gardening stores. Depending on the surface you’re painting on, you can water your acrylics down enough to almost resemble watercolour. This can be a valuable trick to quickly lie in an under painting to get started.

Water In My Background
For years my medium of choice was watercolor on paper. I discovered watercolor painting in high school art class during a semester that allowed us to experiment in watercolor, oil, acrylic, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel, and clay. You name itwe created with it. From that point on watercolor was it for me. Even with all materials we got to get dirty with during my studies for a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I kept coming back to watercolor as my go-to painterly form of expression.
My painting style back then, and until about three years ago, was realistic and considered more representational. I often painted scenes and things from memory if I wasnt using my own as reference. Im quite sure that my capacity to draw from memory when painting realistically translates well to my current abstract style in the ability to visualize artwork before it manifests on the canvas. Its just in there and my job as an artist is to bring it forth and share it with art lovers!

Gesso To Prime The Canvas
If you have a pre-primed canvas and you like how smooth it is, skip this step.
If you do not have a pre-primed canvas or you are not satisfied with how smooth it is, keep reading.
Gesso is a primer for all surfaces. It makes the surface smooth and adhesive. Generally speaking, without gesso you will never have the same expected results. Yes, artists can paint on raw canvas, when they know exactly what they are doing!
The best gesso I can recommend is Golden Acrylic Gesso it is artist-grade gesso, quite affordable . Another great option is Liquitex Gesso but it is slightly more expensive than Golden.
