Here Is A Breakdown Of Our Kitchen Remodel Costs Including The Kitchen Cabinet Painting Cost:
The cost of painting our kitchen cabinets professionally was $4100, which included painting our laundry room cabinets, as well.Gas line installation: $550
Total Kitchen Renovation Costs: $11,800
We were able to sell our old countertops, sink, faucet, stove, microwave and lighting through Facebook Marketplace for $1000, so our total kitchen remodel cost came in just under $11,000.
We could have saved quite a bit of money on our kitchen renovation by painting the cabinets ourselves, and we did think long and hard about taking that route.
Ultimately, I think we made the right decision to pay to have our kitchen cabinets painted professionally. By hiring it out, the cabinets were painted within a week, allowing us to keep moving along with the project, which made the kitchen cabinet painting cost well worth it.
If wed tried painting the kitchen cabinets ourselves, who knows how long our renovation might have taken? I also have a feeling that the spray painted finish on our kitchen cabinets is much more professional looking than our results would have been!
However, if youre thinking about a kitchen remodel and are pretty handy with a paint brush/roller/sprayer, theres a good chance you could keep your kitchen renovation cost well under $10k by painting your kitchen cabinets yourself rather than hiring a professional.
What About A Cheaper Latex Enamel Paint
Now we just used this Behr paint in Charcoal Blue for our bathroom vanity and staircase railing. If you are looking for a more economical paint, this may be the way to go.
We also painted our bathroom vanity cabinets and oak stair railing trying a more inexpensive latex enamel. So far it has held up, but I dont have 7 years to compare to our normal Sherwin Williams pick.
Outdated To Timeless Cabinet Refacing
Refacing is also excellent for dealing with an outdated kitchen cabinet design. Something like this can even boost the property price if the house is meant for selling.
This traditional kitchen interior, for example, had an outdated cabinet. At a glance, it looked like it had a vintage style. Unfortunately, it did not seem to create any point of interest and even made the interior look dull.
Thankfully, a refacing project was performed to change the whole look. As shown in the picture, the cabinets get new doors, new drawer fronts, and, possibly, veneer.
The changes erase the dull impression in the interior since it now has a white color that makes everything brighter. It even looks more compatible with the stainless-steel appliances, including the new oven.

Best Paint For Kitchen Cabinets
In 2014, we used Proclassic Latex Enamel: We did not have ours tinted. I honestly didnt even know that you could tint all different whites at the time and this was also the same white latex enamel we used. The non-tinted Proclassic is Pure White.
Proclassic was our favorite paint until we recently used a new line from Sherwin Williams. I am not even sure this new paint line existed when we first painted our cabinets.
Now we recommend using Sherwin Williams Urethane Trim Enamel. We recently completely updated our kitchen cabinets using this line of paint. While Proclassic Latex Enamel is still great the Emerald Urethane is just another step up.
We loved its self-leveling abilities. It truly made our repainted cabinets look new again!
Stone Neutral Picks Up Granite Highlights

Stone neutral kitchen cabinet paint colors are a wonderful way to approach some contemporary kitchen layouts. These painted cabinets will look even more promising and special if used against a granite backsplash. The coloring is all muted, yet the colors still leave a lasting impression. This also makes it even easier to find suitable décor to add to the kitchen.

Continue With Primer And Check For Drips
Make sure to cover all oak with primer. Use a brush for the grooves and a small roller for all the flat areas. Dont forget about the edges of the doors and drawers.
Pro Tip: Looking at them from multiple angles will ensure you have covered all surfaces and make sure that you have cleaned up any drips that may have occurred.
If any drips happen and you missed them, you will have to sand them down . So it is always easier to spend a little extra time just checking for drips on each step.
Painting Cabinets Using A Kit
Cabinet painting kits include much, but not all, of the materials you need. Cabinet painting kits tend to be expensive, often more costly than the sum of their parts. One prominent brand, Cabinet Transformations from Rustoleum, offers a multi-stage process that lets you paint not only wood cabinets but melamine and laminate cabinets, as well.
Cabinet painting kits help you to revitalize your cabinets through a four-step process:

Before we get to all the beautiful kitchen cabinet inspiration, I want to share a few tips for choosing the right paint for your kitchen cabinets.
When you decide to paint your cabinets, you have two very important decisions to make
Our New Recommendation For Paint
We recently repainted our kitchen cabinets to add a two-toned look. We used Sherwin Williams Urethane Trim Enamel paint and will only be using that to paint cabinets and trim from now on.
Also, dont let the price scare you because:
- You can get these paints on sale most of the time.
- If you are going to do the work, you want the paint finish to last.
Not only did we paint the bottom cabinets a blue green color, but we also repainted the top already white cabinets again 8 years after the original makeover.
While the Proclassic Latex Enamel worked well, this is a new Emerald Urethane Trim product that gave such a great finish due to having more self-leveling properties.

Feeling Impatient Theres Spray Paint For That
If painting by hand sounds tiresome, it is possible to spray-paint your cabinets. Follow all of the same prep steps with care, then take your cabinet fronts and drawers outside before spraying. Source a professional-quality sprayer and remember this mantra: multiple thin coats, not one thick one.

Is It Better To Roll Or Use A Paintbrush On Cabinets
We love using both a paintbrush and a small foam roller to paint these oak cabinets. Our cabinets had a small groove that only a brush could fit and then the small roller works faster and smoother on the flat areas.

Mistake : You Skip Cleaning The Wood Before Beginning To Paint
“No matter how clean you think your kitchen is, you need to wipe everything down with a grease remover,” says Fahrbach. Otherwise, when you add a water-based paint to an oil-covered door, the paint won’t stick. He recommends a paint-prep degreaser called TSP, and a non-scratch delicate scrub sponge for stuck on spots.
You Didn’t Use The Best Paint Brand

You can choose from a slew of paint brands ranging from Clare to a Good Housekeeping Institute favorite, Benjamin Moore Advance, which has a smooth finish that’s kitchen-friendly. While it may be a bit more than some other paints on the shelf, it’s worth it. Gibbons also likes to use a satin polyurethane top coat for durability. It helps your paint dry to a very hard, enamel-like finish.
And you likely won’t be using more than two gallons of paint, so costs won’t be as prohibitive as if you were painting an entire room.
Worried about visible brush marks? Virginia at Live Love DIYfollows her brush strokes with a foam roller to smooth things out. And a more experienced DIYer might like the finish provided by a spray gun , but it’s a bit more unwieldy than a brush.

Failing To Label The Hardware And Doors
Even if you don’t have a ton of cabinets, once all of the doors and hardware are removed, it can be difficult to remember what goes back where. To make reattaching the doors much easier later on, number each cabinet door as you remove it. Place the hardware for each door in a small bag and label each one with the coordinating cabinet number.

General Finishes Milk Paint
General Finishes Milk Paintis actually an acrylic paint, not a true milk paint, and doesnt usually require primer. It is easy to work with, goes on smoothly, and dries to a hard finish. A separate sealer is not required, but it is recommended to use a sealer for high-traffic projects like painting cabinets.

Bolder With Black Cabinet Refacing
Do you wish to create a bolder kitchen look? If yes, why dont you try to reface your cabinets and color them in black as done in the project below?
Take a look at these medium-tone wood cabinets. While they looked nice and compatible with the backsplash, countertops, and floor tiles, they did not seem to be the right choice for the kitchen. That is why a refacing would be nice to improve everything.
This refacing project includes several details. The most obvious one is, of course, the new black color.
About the cabinet boxes, it seems that the project still uses the original one. The one that is replaced is the doors, which are now flat instead of raised-panel. New handles are also installed, and they somehow look compatible with new appliances added along with the refacing project.
Another detail that you should not miss here is the molding. At the top, a new crown is added, enhancing the decorative value to the next level. While at the bottom, a new choice is also added to replace the old one.
Bright Spring Colors Are A Lively Choice
Who said that bright colors are reserved for springtime and summer time? If you want to capture that sensation day in and day out, then consider painting your cabinets using some bold, bright paint colors. This provides some good contrast with everything else in the kitchen. With that said, brighter paint color can also work well against more natural kitchen décor like wooden countertops, etc.

After: Bold Kitchen Style
Removing walls helped reconfigure the layout to create a sunny, open space. The homeowners used drywall, lattice strips, and metallic paint to make a focal-point range hood. The home’s black-and-white palette continues in the kitchen, along with bold accent fabrics to tie it to the rest of the living areas.
Cabinet Refacing For A More Classic Look

Kitchen cabinet refacing is not always about making the furniture look more modern. It can also obtain something like a more classic look as done in the following project.
The original cabinets have wood color for the box and white for the doors. This traditional furniture piece had a vintage look in it at a glance. Although it did have some charm, it looked pretty plain because of the flat panels.
The refacing project gives the cabinet a whole new look. As you can see here, it now has recessed flat panels for the doors and raised for the drawer fronts. Both are solid maple materials.
The color is another significant change resulting from the refacing. The cabinets now look more elegant because of the cherry finish.
The simple yet significant change is the satin nickel hardware. It makes the cabinets look so different than before.

Paint All The Surfaces
Painting your upper and lower cabinets the same color is pretty standard stuff, but painting the walls the same color can really take things to a new level. This kitchen from Københavns Møbelsnedkeri, which really commits to that light blue, has been one of my favorites for years. Covering your kitchen cabinets and walls in the same color is a great recipe for a beautiful, immersive look.
Consider A Contrasting Island
When designing a kitchen island, painted kitchen cabinet ideas will offer a host of inspiration. Your kitchen island provides the perfect canvas to play with contrasting colors in your kitchen. Painting your central island in a bold, statement shade and pairing with more muted colored wall cabinets will instantly draw people into the heart of the space, encouraging them to take a moment to sit and chat while you are cooking.
If you’re looking for more inspiration, there are plenty of kitchen island ideas from modern kitchen island ideas to country kitchen island ideas, that will certainly help you to decide on the right design for your space.

Gray Is A Perfectly Modern Match With White
A dark gray paint color can work well with just about any kitchen design. For the modern look, pair the gray cabinet colors with lighter tones throughout. The white countertop along with a matching sink seems to capture natural light even better thanks to the contrast provided by the dark gray cabinets.
White On White Is Classic And Clean
Rather than go for any light or dark cabinet colors, let us just forgo all that altogether. Instead, lets take the traditional, classic route of an all-white kitchen. The white cabinet paint is powerful and vibrant, allowing it to still stand out against the rest of the similarly colored room. If you need to add some contrast to the area, consider silver hardware along the cabinets that match up with the sink faucet.
