Does Painting Bathroom Shower Tiles Really Work In The Long Run
If you are looking for a short-term solution to a tiled shower enclosure that just doesnt go with your decor choices, painting the tile is affordable and achievable! However, if you are planning on painting tiles as the 10-year option instead of replacing the tiles, you will need to be prepared to repaint them every few years. If your tiles are damaged and chipped, painting is not a great idea.

I bought this as a temporary fix to my outdated kitchen tile backsplash since we cant afford a total kitchen re-do for a few more years, she wrote. It turned out better than I ever hoped, and so far, the surface wipes clean from splatters without damaging the paint.

What Is The Best Bathroom Tile Paint
There are a lot of options when it comes to paint, even paint for tiles, so its very important to do your homework before choosing the best one for you. Customer reviews are always a great way to see if a paint youre considering will stand up to the job its for. Later in this article, weve also listed a few options of bathroom tile paint we think are some of the best.
Water-based paints will not hold up in areas with any amount of water, so they arent the best for bathrooms and not for wet areas. For your bathroom tile paint, the best options are anti-bacterial, water-resistant epoxy paints and primers.
Ready To Paint Your Bathroom Tiles

That brings us to the end of our investigation into whether you can paint bathroom or shower tiles. As long as your tiles are made of glazed porcelain, ceramic or concrete, the answer is yes!
Just take your time with preparation, and choose a primer thats suitable for your tiles. Add a couple of coats of paint, and your tiles will look great!
Changing the grouting will make them look even better, but its a lot of work. Whitening it up with a grout pen when youve finished painting will take a fraction of the time. And the results will be almost as good.

Painting Bathroom Or Shower Tiles
The answer to the question of whether you can paint bathroom tiles is it depends. On what, I hear you cry! On what the tiles are made of. And to a lesser extent, where theyre positioned in the bathroom.
Not all kinds of tiles will bond effectively with paint. Unglazed tiles will simply absorb it. That will leave you with a dull, flat color if theres any color at all.
Glass isnt a good option for most paints either. Its so smooth, it wont provide a key for the paint to stick to. There are glass paints out there, but theyre not designed to be used on large areas.
If your tiles are glazed ceramic or porcelain, though congratulations! You can paint them and get good results without spending a fortune.
Its best to paint tiles that dont get excessively wet. You canpaint tiles in a shower cubicle and weve seen it done to good effect. But you may well find that the paint begins to blister and peel after a while.
If youre happy to do some touching up, that may not be a problem. Just be prepared!
So now you know what types of tiles can be painted how do you do it? Lets start by taking a look at what youll need for the job.
Types Of Paints To Use On Shower Floors
The best type of paint to use for shower floors is high-gloss oil-based paint. Thats because oil-based paints have a colorful glossy coat resistant to water, moisture, and scratches. Oil-based paint will protect the shower floor and beautify it.
But, you must seal the oil-based paint. Oil-based paints have low moisture resistance, so the paint wont last long if exposed to constant water. So, you must apply a water-resistant sealer, such as polyurethane or varnish, over the oil-based paint. The sealer will produce a glossy clear coat that protects the paint and shower floor from moisture, water, and scratches.
You shouldnt use water-based paint on shower floors. Thats because water-based paints will get washed off if exposed to constant water. Water-based paint wont last more than 1 week on a shower floor. However, a sealant will protect the water-based paint allowing it to last longer on a shower floor.

What Are The Best Waterproof Paints For Shower Tiles
My favourite tile paint is One Coat Tile Paint by Ronseal. It is affordable at about £20 per 0.75 litres which covers about 8 square meters. Remember that you will need two or more coats for the best results.
Dulux also offers an excellent option, although its typically a little more expensive than the Ronseal paint. You can order it in a rainbow of colours for that modern designer look that you love.
For superior results, look for Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit, which includes their two-part epoxy tile paint that will perform better inside the shower and on floors.

Our Bathroom Shower Before & After
Its crazy how much brighter and bigger the space looks now!!! I can hardly even believe these photos.
At first, I didnt know if I was going to paint the bathtub along with the shower. But I quickly realized that the bathtub was going to look super dingy next to the bright white shower tile, so I might as well paint it all. Im so happy that I did.
I have a paint drip here or there, so I would highly recommend taking your time and reviewing your work as you go. I was eager to get this project done and to take photos, a video, and create an Instagram story, so I was a bit distracted during the project. Make sure you check for any rogue hairs, dust, or drips as you paint!
You can see the texture from the flower pattern, but you definitely cant see it popping through. It looks so much better to me!
Paint Wont Waterproof Your Shower Floor
Paint wont waterproof a shower floor. Thats because most paints have low levels of moisture-resistant features and are not waterproof. So, if the paint is exposed to constant water, the paint will get washed off.
The only way to waterproof a shower floor is to use waterproof paint or sealer. A sealer will produce a clear coat and protect the paint and shower floor from moisture, water, and other damage.
However, you must re-coat the sealer every two years to prevent it from washing off. Thats because the shower floor is exposed to constant water, and sealants, such as polyurethane, will start to dissolve after a while.

Cover The Edges With Painters Tape
Cover the edge of the tiles to prevent the paint from getting underneath the tiles. Also, cover the corners and the lines between the tiles using painters tape. This is to prevent brush strokes or paint splatters between the tiles.
If you want to design the tiles to suit your taste, use painters tape to demarcate different areas of the tiles.
How To Paint Shower Tiles

Materials needed: -Bleach -Comet with bleach powder -Small high density foam paint roller and paint brush. This paint did not come off even wrapped up brushes so I suggest having extra rollers and using cheaper brushes. -Small tray.
First you need to take off any glue and caulk that is touching the tiles you are going to paint. We decided to remove our whole glass shower door and use a curtain in the future, so there was a lot of glue to peel off the wall. Using an x-acto knife, utility knife, or flathead screwdriver with a hammer, get all the glue and caulk out so the paint will seal well. This part took me a good exhausting few hours, so you might want to do this ahead of time. Others pointed out that this would be a good time to fix any broken tile and grout if you want.
Next you will be following the instructions on the paint can on how to use your cleaning supplies to prep the tile surface. They are tough chemicals, so I put on my respirator and gloves, and turned on the fan before starting this step.
I kept thinking of this guy
1. Vacuum the tub of dust and hairs. Rinse.
2. Apply bleach, scrub, rinse thoroughly.
3. Next, spread Comet across the tiles and scrub away. Rinse thoroughly.
4. Finally, spread LimeAway across the tiles and let sit 5 minutes. Scrub. Rinse thoroughly.
5. Let dry for at least 90 minutes before painting.
For all my tile I did 3 coats + 1 touch up session and used almost 2 full kits. Layer three ultimately covered up the previous tile color.

Paint The Concrete Floor
Once the shower floor is cleaned and primed, apply the paint. To apply the paint, use a paint sprayer or roller. You must apply 3 coats of paint over a concrete shower floor.
Once the last coat of primer fully dries, apply 2-3 coats of polyurethane or varnish. Polyurethane will seal the shower floor paint and protect it from water, moisture, and other damage.
What Paint Can You Use To Paint Tiles
You cant use just any kind of paint on ceramic bathroom tile. You need paint that isnt water-based, otherwise, it will disintegrate in your bathroom. The best choice is anti-bacterial, water-resistant epoxy paint. Most of the time, home kits and DIY tile paints are available in limited colours like white, grey, or black.
We can recommend White Knight Tile Paint because its available to tint to thousands of colours. You can also consider getting a prepackaged tile painting kit from Rust-Oleum or Homax, which includes the paint and supplies. Lastly, if youre in a rush, theres also One Coat Tile Paint that reduces your drying time.

Preparing The Tiled Surface
Before you paint, youll want to sand, scrub, and prime the tile.
When sanding and scrubbing, go over all areas of the tile: the face, the grout, and over any buildup or stains. Be sure to vacuum up any dust after sanding, and then give it all a heavy scrub down and rinse.
Once the tile is clean and dry, its time for primer. Different tile types require different types of primer: epoxy or urethaneprimer for ceramic or porcelain and masonry primer for natural stone or unglazed quarry tile.
Apply The Second And Subsequent Coats Of Paint
After the first coat of paint is dry, add a second coat and wait for 2 to 3 days before applying a second coat. After another 2 or 3 days, add the third coat of paint.
Most tiles need three coats to have the perfect look. However, if you feel your paint isnt good enough, add another coat giving the 2/3-day break in between the coats.

Painting Tiles In High
So, your want your bathroom tiles painted in all areas, including around the bathtub, in the shower, and around the sink. What do you need to know before starting?
The good news is that yes, shower tiles and other water-risk areas can be painted. Realize, though, that areas exposed to heavy amounts of water have a higher risk of prematurely fading, blistering, or peeling. This typically would include tile inside a shower, tile directly outside the bathtub, and vanity surfaces near sinks.
Just make sure youre aware that these areas will likely require more maintenance than your average wall, backsplash, or floor area away from the tub. They will also likely require a stronger type of epoxy paint for high-moisture areas if you want a longer lifespan.
Paint The Tiles With A Brush Or Roller
You can paint the tiles in your shower with a brush or roller designed for use on ceramic tile. Start by cleaning the surface of the tile with mild soap and water to remove any dirt or residue. Once the surface is clean, apply a primer designed for use on ceramic tile and allow it to dry completely. Once the primer is dry, you can begin painting the tiles with your chosen color of paint. Apply the paint in thin coats and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Once you have finished painting, you can seal the paint with a clear sealer designed for use on ceramic tile.

What Kind Of Paint Do You Use To Paint Bathroom Shower Tiles
There are two types of paint designed to be used for tile. One is latex, which is popular with the DIY crowd as it emits low fumes and is easy to clean up. The other is a two-part epoxy paint that delivers a more durable finish. It does significantly off-gas, so you will need to open windows and set up fans. You may even want to sleep over at a friends flat for a night.
Any painttile or wall paintthat says it is a one-coat paint and primer is not telling you the whole truth. While you can skip the primer coat before adding colour, it is extremely likely that you will need two or three coats to get a nice even colour on the tiles without visible streaks. The primer paints cost more per bucket, so after the extra coats, your cost savings may be erased.
Read the label and make sure that it is a paint designed for use on ceramic and glazed tiles.
