When I say repaint, I mean repainting a dresser that is already painting, as previously mentioned. But keep in mind that these two guides are all you will need to paint any dresser no matter the condition.

Do You Have To Sand Or Prime Before Painting Furniture

If youre a newbie to painting furniture, lets address this question because it always comes up. The answer to whether you have to sand or prime before paining furniture is that it depends on two things:

• The condition of your furniture, and
• The type of paint youre using.

The Condition of Your Furniture

Does the furniture have lots of chips in the old finish? Is it bumpy on the surface with old stickers from kids? Are there gouges or scratches? If you answer yes to any of these, then you should sand your furniture before painting it. It doesnt have to be a sand-down-to-the-bare-bones it just has to be smooth to accept paint.

Youll need a medium grit sandpaper of 150-grit, followed by a 220-grit fine sandpaper to smooth out the scratches. You can do this either by hand or using an orbital sander. Be sure to wear a dust mask, too. If youve got deep gouges, use a bit of wood filler to fill any gouges or scratches, then sand them smooth when the wood filler dries so it can be painted over. The surface should turn out very smooth!

If youre trying to paint furniture right out of the can that you bought from your local home improvement store, youll definitely need to prime first. However, if youre using paint specially formulated for furniture , then you wont necessarily have to prime first.

Heres the truth: as good as most furniture paint is, most of the brands will require you to paint two coats. Well..not require.especially if youre going for a look thats more like a white-washed effect. But if you want complete coverage, plan on two coats of paint. Be sure you let the paint dry in between coats. Some paints suggest 2-4 hours of drying time in between. Ive done second coats in about 1 hour. You might even need to do THREE coats, depending on your dark your dresser is. The darker the wood, the more coats you might need.

When the piece is dry, place hardware back on making sure to place hinges and doors in the same place it was originally.

If you dont need to use the piece right away let it sit for a few days before using so the paint can cure. This should be done with or without waxing. After a day or two you can start to use it and will be rewarded with a beautiful finish for many years to come.

Sealing The Painted Surface

If using an enamel paint there is no need to seal the surface. If your paint is not an enamel, then you can seal the painted finish with a water-based poly. Minwax Polycylic is my go to, but you any water-based brand of poly will be fine.

• DO NOT use oil-based poly over paint. It will darken and yellow the color.

Use Hardware That Stands Out

Sometimes all you need to update your dresser is new hardware. So if the stain or paint is in good condition then consider using new hardware instead. You can get really nice hardware if you arent buying paint.

Or you can paint it and buy new hardware. Then people will wonder where in the world you got your new dresser. When youve actually had it around for decades! This is a wonderful way to save money.
