A Chest of Drawers Makeover with Chalk Paint

If youre looking for a quick repainting dresser guide then this should do you well. This will take you through the steps of painting a dresser that is already painted but it can also be helpful on a new dresser.

When I say repaint, I mean repainting a dresser that is already painting, as previously mentioned. But keep in mind that these two guides are all you will need to paint any dresser no matter the condition.

Do You Have To Sand Or Prime Before Painting Furniture

If youre a newbie to painting furniture, lets address this question because it always comes up. The answer to whether you have to sand or prime before paining furniture is that it depends on two things:

  • The condition of your furniture, and
  • The type of paint youre using.

The Condition of Your Furniture

Does the furniture have lots of chips in the old finish? Is it bumpy on the surface with old stickers from kids? Are there gouges or scratches? If you answer yes to any of these, then you should sand your furniture before painting it. It doesnt have to be a sand-down-to-the-bare-bones it just has to be smooth to accept paint.

Youll need a medium grit sandpaper of 150-grit, followed by a 220-grit fine sandpaper to smooth out the scratches. You can do this either by hand or using an orbital sander. Be sure to wear a dust mask, too. If youve got deep gouges, use a bit of wood filler to fill any gouges or scratches, then sand them smooth when the wood filler dries so it can be painted over. The surface should turn out very smooth!

The Type of Paint Youre Using

If youre trying to paint furniture right out of the can that you bought from your local home improvement store, youll definitely need to prime first. However, if youre using paint specially formulated for furniture , then you wont necessarily have to prime first.

Getting Started With Painting A Dresser

Its happened to all of us. It starts with a chest of drawers that doesnt feel very you. Perhaps youve inherited it from a grandparent. Or youve found it for a bargain price at a flea market or car boot sale. It might even be the same dresser that everyone else already has from IKEA. Then it sits in the corner of your room, sticking out like a sore thumb. Simply put: it just isnt your style.

So what do you do to make an old dresser your own? Your first step is to choose your colour palette. Either get a Chalk Paint colour card from your local Annie Sloan Stockist or browse our website for inspiration. Will you use one colour or two? Perhaps you want to add some metallics to create a pattern or border around the drawers. Think about the hardware, too. Some on-trend handles or knobs can instantly elevate an old chest of drawers and are easily replaced as soon as the next trend comes along.

Step : Apply Two Coats Of Furniture Paint

Heres the truth: as good as most furniture paint is, most of the brands will require you to paint two coats. Well..not require.especially if youre going for a look thats more like a white-washed effect. But if you want complete coverage, plan on two coats of paint. Be sure you let the paint dry in between coats. Some paints suggest 2-4 hours of drying time in between. Ive done second coats in about 1 hour. You might even need to do THREE coats, depending on your dark your dresser is. The darker the wood, the more coats you might need.

If youre just painting a basic coat, dont worry about any special technique. If youre old enough to remember Danielson from The Karate Kid, you simply paint the fence. LOL. Its that simple. Where you need to be careful is that you dont overload your paintbrush. Overloading your paintbrush will leave your dresser with drips. To prevent paint drips, keep the paint on your brush light. To remove paint drips, smooth them out before they dry. If theyre already dry, lightly sand them smooth after they dry and touch up the paint lightly.

    Place Hardware Back On

When the piece is dry, place hardware back on making sure to place hinges and doors in the same place it was originally.

If you dont need to use the piece right away let it sit for a few days before using so the paint can cure. This should be done with or without waxing. After a day or two you can start to use it and will be rewarded with a beautiful finish for many years to come.

    Sealing The Painted Surface

If using an enamel paint there is no need to seal the surface. If your paint is not an enamel, then you can seal the painted finish with a water-based poly. Minwax Polycylic is my go to, but you any water-based brand of poly will be fine.

    • DO NOT use oil-based poly over paint. It will darken and yellow the color.

  • How To Chalk Paint A Chest Of Drawers

    by Megan | Feb 12, 2019 | Best Furniture Products |

Chalk paint is so much fun! I feel like there is still a lot of confusion out there as to what chalk painting furniture is. Its hard for people to realize that you do not have to completely sand down a piece of furniture before you paint it and make it pretty.

Chalk paint has really come to light by Annie Sloan. Her company is over 25 years old now and she actually got with a manufacturer to invent the perfect paint for furniture. Chalk Paint has been around since the Egyptians. They used paints made from minerals and pigments to have their own chalk paint.

If you are a busy mom or dad or person! Then chalk paint is the way you want to go with all of your painted furniture needs. Chalk paint is also great for painting kitchen cabinets. It adheres very well to cabinet finishes.
