Myth #3 Will Ceramic Coating Peel Off
Ceramic Coating forms a thin, incredibly strong bond on the top of your clear coat. Most will think that when it fails, it’s going to fail like a clear coat, separating from the base coat. When a Ceramic Coating fails, just like when wax fails, you’re not going to see it peeling. It simply just wears away and you’re going to see water beading and the dirt shedding qualities . There’s also no worry if you get a rock chip , there’s no risk of the entire Ceramic Coating being compromised.
How Much Does Ceramic Coating Cost
Since there is now a wide range of offerings for ceramic coatings, prices can vary wildly depending on what youre shopping for. Ceramic spray coatings are the most affordable, and you can typically find a bottle from a reputable brand for around $20. Keep in mind that some of these products are hybrid ceramic coatings, which isnt exactly the same as actual ceramic coating.
There are also wax applications that have been infused with SiO2 and ceramic properties that are a bit more expensive, typically under $50. SiO2 is silicone dioxide, and when infused in a polymer matrix, it delivers some of the characteristics youd expect from ceramic coating. Again, some of these hybrid ceramic waxes arent true ceramic coatings, but offer better protection and durability than traditional wax.
Things get a bit interesting if youre shopping online for 9H ceramic coating. We recommend sticking to reputable brands, such as Adams Polishes, which offers a kit for around $85. Avoid no-name brands and if the price seems like its too good to be true, it probably is. Many of the more affordable products likely wont live up to their claims, especially when it comes to durability and how long the coating lasts.

What Does A Nano

So weve discussed the different type of ceramic coatings for cars, even showed the differences between different grades and application methods. But what exactly does a ceramic coating do for the automotive world?
Well, this is where a lot of the confusion and flat out misconceptions come into play. A ceramic coating is meant to PROTECT the finish or top layer of different materials found on a car, truck, SUV, motorcycle, or other piece of equipment.
It accomplishes this by forming a quartz-like transparent shell on the top coat that blocks UV light, chemicals, tree sap, brake dust, and other contaminants from the raw material underneath. The hydrophobic surface makes the car ultra slick, which allows water to just sheet off with little effort.
Thats the ultimate job of a ceramic coating. Now, where the confusion comes into play, is the level of this protection and the qualities or attributes that this type of coating produces.
Some of the qualities that result due to applying a ceramic coating for cars include:

Myth #: Is It Easy To Apply Ceramic Coating
This is somewhat true. With Consumer-Grade Ceramic Coating widely available, the actual application process is relatively easy. That said, itâs not necessarily simple. Before you can even apply Ceramic Coating, the surface has to be free of surface blemishes, which applies to even brand new vehicles. The process really depends on the condition of the paint. As the Ceramic Coating will semi-permanently add a layer over your vehicleâs paint, itâs crucial to do any Paint Correction or Polishing before applying Ceramic Coating. Itâs up to you to decide, but I do recommend washing the car, claying, polishing, and keeping it pristine while applying the coating.
Skipping the entire prep process will result in a loss of shine and the Ceramic Coating will lock in your paint defects for a long time. Worst yet, the âadvertisedâ longevity of the product will not perform due to improper application.
What Are The Advantages Of Ceramic Coating

Paint correction and ceramic coating play an important role in the whole process. Because the surface of the paint is exposed to a harsh environment. Does Paint Correction Remove The Clear Coat
Essentially YES. The process of polishing involves using a gritty substance called a cutting compound. When you activate the electric polisher, the polish liquid or paste is spread evenly on the vehicles painted surface, creating friction to cut through the clear coat of your paintwork. The polishers are made in multiple grit levels, some of them are intended to fill a scratch while others are designed to remove the clear until the scratch is removed.
This introduces that potential risk we spoke about above.
If the scratch is deeply cut into the clear coat, it is better to consult with a professional detailer or auto body repair company prior to starting to remove the damaged. If you cut the clear too thin, then protective coatings will have a hard time bonding to the surface. Additionally, the paint will not pop or shine as well as youd hope.

What Are The Different Types Of Ceramic Coating
There was a day when the ceramic coating world was simple. It was a professional-grade, high-quality silicon dioxide or SiO2 based formula, only available through authorized installers. The formulation was scientifically engineered to use nano-technology which would penetrate microscopic imperfections found in any solid surface that was porous in nature.
Todays ceramic coating segment is a saturated one with a blend of professional-grade options like Ceramic Pro to Teflon-based spray ceramic coatings on a car that replicate many attributes of real coatings but are sparse on protective qualities and longevity. There are even ceramic-infused car wax products that bond to the cars paint and replicates some of the qualities.
Products like wax made from carnauba serve as a sacrificial layer on top of the painted surface. Paint sealants also help to protect a paint job. However, if youre looking for the best liquid solution to protect the cars surface, the ceramic coating reigns supreme.

Myth #: Are All Ceramic Coatings The Same

While you are shopping and doing your research, you will notice one thing: prices are all over the place. You may be getting prices from $300 all the way to $3,000. There is no Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price for Ceramic Coating.
This is due to dealership pricing at the point of sale, experienced installers, new installers looking for work, or just shops trying to sell work at a smaller profit but the quality is much lower. So what does your natural instinct tell you? Pick the cheapest since they are all the same!
Over the past decade, I have seen âfly by nightâ shops install Ceramic Coating and close down after a year or two. Leaving their clients with no place to go to for maintenance or warranty claims. I have seen brand-new Teslas and Ferraris being repainted due to poor prep and polishing techniques.
Itâs a shame, but happens daily.
All the Ceramic Coatings are going to protect your vehicle the same way. All Ceramic Coatings are durable, shiny and they are going to last a whole lot longer than any wax or sealant. Ceramic Coatings vary on their thickness, slickness, durability, longevity and the gloss.
Consumer Grade Ceramic Coatings can be bought online and are typically a single level application. They are much more forgiving to apply, but they don’t cure as hard, so you really don’t get a deep shine and durability associated with the Professional Grade Ceramic Coatings .

Paint correction involves either a 1 step or a multi-step polishing to remove any swirls or webbing. If you decide to skip this step any defect in the paint will be magnified tenfold by the ceramic coating.
Generally speaking the average cost for a 1 step polish done by a professional certified installer will be around $250. A Multistep polish done by a skilled professional usually starts at $375+ and can go up to $600.00 for neglected cars. In severe cases hand sanding the paint and then doing a multi-step polish to remove sanding marks and bring the paint back to better than factory condition by removing factory orange peel can add anywhere from $1,300 to $1,800. No matter who you choose please make sure they are a trained professional especially if you own a black car or truck. See our paint correction page for more information.
What Is Paint Correction
Paint correction is the process of removing minor scratches and imperfections found in the vehicles clear coat. Using an electric polisher, a microfiber buffing pad, and a special cutting compound, the detailer or you will cut into the clear coat of a vehicles paint till the scratches are leveled or removed.
When completed correctly and taking your time there is no need to stress. However, if you try to rush the job, it is possible to damage the clear coating past the point of repair. Do You Need To Polish Small Scratches Before Applying Ppf
The answer to this question will depend based on the type of scratch and the brand of paint protection film. If the PPF is infused with nanotechnology, such as Ceramic Pro Kavaca Instant Healing PPF, minor paint damage can be filled with the adhesive. Heavy defects will require paint correction or body repair.
Ceramic Pro Kavaca Instant Healing paint protection film is engineered to repair the top layer if its scratched. However, the same technology, along with proprietary ingredients in the adhesive has been shown to repair minor oxidation on a clear coat, fill small swirl marks and even some scratches.
While its always recommended to ensure that your paint is in optimal condition before applying a paint protection film, there are situations when you can reduce this issue if you use the RIGHT PPF.
How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last
There is no simple answer to this question, for one main reason: it depends on the product you use. If youre using spray coatings, like Meguiars Hybrid Ceramic Wax, expect it to last three to six months. Naturally, its durability is affected by your environment and how often your vehicle is properly washed. Other DIY nano ceramic coatings will claim to last anywhere from two to five years, depending on the product.
Professional ceramic coatings will also vary, based on the service offered by the detailer. Basic protection will typically last up to two years, while 9H coating can offer up to five years of protection. Some companies offer lifetime protection on their ceramic coatings, by adding multiple coats of durable 9H product to your vehicle. Again, this all comes down to how much youre willing to pay and how often youre caring for your car with proper washes.
