Warhol painted it soon after Monroe’s 1962 death by barbiturate overdose, it’s part of a series of five portraits of Monroe he painted which became known as the “Shot” series. The nickname was born when a visitor to Warhol’s “Factory” studio in Manhattan fired a gun at them, piercing the portraits which were later repaired.
“The painting transcends the genre of portraiture,” Rotter continued, “superseding 20th century art and culture. Standing alongside Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and Picasso’s Les Demoiselle d’Avignon, Warhol’s Marilyn is one of the greatest paintings of all time.”

A famous Andy Warhol silkscreen of sold for $195 million at a Christies charity auction Monday night, setting a record for the most expensive piece of American art ever sold.
The iconic Warhol painting shattered the previous record set by the late Brooklyn artist Jean-Michel Basquiats untitled 1982 skull painting, which fetched $110.5 million dollars at a Sothebys auction in New York in 2017. Warhol had held the record prior to Basquiat after his 1963 workSilver Car Crash sold for $105.4 million in 2013.
The auction house estimated Warhols 1964 painting at $200 million before the event.
The winning bidder was identified as art dealer Larry Gagosian.
All proceeds from Lot 36A will go to the Thomas and Doris Ammann Foundation Zurich, which put the painting up for auction. The foundation aims to help children with health care and educational programs.

The painting has a fascinating backstory. Originally one of five silkscreens painted in 1964, the 40-by-40-inch prints were stored in a stack at Warhols New York studio, The Factory.
According to Artsy, performance artist, Dorothy Podber stopped by and asked if she could shoot them, and he said yes, presuming she meant with a camera. Podber pulled out a revolver and shot all but the turquoise print in the forehead.
Warhol had the four paintings restored and they became known as the Shot Marilyns.

The previous record was set in 2015 when a 1955 painting by Pablo Picasso Les Femmes dAlger sold for $179.4m.
It has also become the most expensive work by an American artist to be sold at auction. The record was previously held by a 1982 skull painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Warhols sometime friend, collaborator and rival, which sold for $110.5m in 2017.
According to reports, the buyer was Larry Gagosian, a US art dealer and owner of a chain of galleries. Shot Sage Blue Marilyn is one in a series of portraits Warhol made of Monroe after her death.
The sale of the 40in by 40in-work at Christies also smashed Warhols previous record. That had been held by Silver car crash , which sold for $105.4m in 2013.
On 18 May, Phillips will hold a sale of 20th-century and contemporary art, featuring a bright orange 1982 untitled Basquiat with an estimate of $70m.

Warhol created Shot Sage Blue Marilyn two years after the actress death one of five versions he created in 1964, CNBC reported. The idea for the different colored portraits stemmed from a promotional photograph Monroe used for the 1953 film Niagara.

The Portrait Was Nearly Shot By A Revolver
Shot Sage Blue Marilyn was nearly part of a series of portraits of Munroe by Warhol called the “Shot Marilyns”. Warhol painted Marilyns in 1964 with different colored backgrounds: red, orange, light blue and sage blue.
Warhol stored the 40 inch by 40 inch canvases at The Factory, his studio in Manhattan. Dorothy Podber, a friend of The Factory photographer Bill Name, saw the paintings in the studio and asked Warhol whether she could shoot them. The artist thought she meant photograph the paintings, but she actually meant shooting them with a gun.
Podber put on a pair of gloves, brandished a small revolver from her purse and fired a shot into the pile of four of the five Marilyn paintings, damaging them. The fifth painting, which was sold for the record price on Monday, was not in the stack, so it was not damaged. The four others became known as the “Shot Marilyns.”
It would not be the last time shots were fired in Warhol’s studio, in 1968, Warhol was shot by Valerie Solanas over a dispute about a play script Solanas had written.
