Wrapping Up The Graco Sprayer Review
Love it? Love it not? If you are one of those DIY enthusiasts dreaming big in your paint job, this sprayer is just right up your alley. A real deal with all good values Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer seems to tick all the boxes.
Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus Vs Graco Magnum X7 Electric Trueairless Sprayer
The X7 is a step above the Project Painter in terms of power and its inclusion of a wheeled cart. Youll pay an additional $150 or so to get it, so youll want to be sure you need those features. Having tested both, we can say that the wheeled cart isnt enough of a game-changer to warrant the expense. However, the additional power of the X7 lets you use up to 100 feet of hose, so if you have a large, multi-story building to paint, you may value that option enough to spend a bit more.
Yes, buy it!
The Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer is a compact, time-saving tool that we didnt know we needed until we used it. Because the cost is fairly low, you only need a few larger projects to justify the expense versus renting. If you mostly paint smaller projects such as furniture, there are smaller, cheaper sprayers to consider, however.

Versatile Machine: Handles A Variety Of Paints
One of the best features of this machine is its ability to handle a variety of types of paint. It can use anything from thin-medium paint, coatings, stains, latex materials, and acrylic. Its a great choice for exteriors and a good for painting interior walls.
The Graco Magnum 257025 also lets you spray with the SG2 gun directly from two different sized containers: either a 1-gallon or 5-gallon container, depending on the size of the project youre working on.
The Negatives Are Easily Solved

The Graco project painter plus sprayer 257025 has very few negatives and the few it does have are so minor and easily solved with some of this sprayers built-in features.
The only two negatives noticed are that sometimes it can clog and that the machine can overspray. However, these are both minor issues because the reversible tip solves the clogging problem.
The reverse tip allows you to quickly remove the clogged paint anytime that it might happen. All you have to do to fix this is to reverse the tip and then keep spraying gently. This will unclog the paint with ease so you wont have to stop in the middle of your project.
In regards to the Graco 257025 over-spraying, well, this is easily solved with the adjustable pressure control.
So if youre wanting the sprayer to avoid over spraying, just make sure to use it on lower pressure. The other option that Im sure youre aware of, is to make sure that youve done your prep work before you start painting.
Make sure to cover everything that needs to be covered . If you have everything important covered up it wont be an issue if the machine accidentally oversprays.

Best Material To Use In Your Graco Magnum
The Graco Project Painter Plus is a bit picky when it comes to the materials that you can spray with consistency.
Latex paint works the best. It did an adequate job with some stains, but it had to be a stain with a thicker viscosity. It did a great job spraying acrylic paint.
Overall, we did find that water-based paints tend to do better with this sprayer than oil-based paints. You can use mineral spirits to thin the oil-based paint to the right consistency if you want for results that are about equal.
What it doesnt do well is spray lacquers or enamels. It will clog if you use materials that have textures in them.
As long as your project requires the thicker viscosity items mentioned above, we found the results to be smooth and consistent.
Our Experience With The Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus
When we first started using the Graco Project Painter Plus for the first time, we found that there was very little natural overspray.
Assuming you have still conditions, the pattern of paint flow is very predictable. The overspray is minimal, but environmental conditions can affect the little bit that does exist.
Make sure you watch the wind while working outside. Once you discover the best range for your paint, the spraying process is incredibly forgiving.
The one issue we do see with this particular sprayer is that the pump is not currently repairable, so if it breaks down, youre purchasing a new machine unless youre still under warranty.
Get yourself a 10 inch extension pole for those weird places and save your back. We also appreciated the easy-to-access adjustable pressure controls that are on this Graco unit.
Everything you need is placed on a dial that is easy to turn, even while working. The symbols for each setting are placed in such a way that you can easily see them so you dont have to guess at what youre doing.

An Overview On Paint Sprayers

Anyone who has spent an afternoon or longer applying layer after layer of paint to a room knows the value of a paint sprayer, even if theyve never used one before. Why brush when you can spray a nice, even coat with a wave of your hand? Why indeed but take a little of that time youre going to save on the job and do your research. Not every sprayer is ideal for every job.
Essentially, there are three different types of paint sprayers. The classic version is an air sprayer, which typically uses an air compressor to push paint out through a nozzle. While easy to use and inexpensive, its a tradeoff in terms of performance. As you might expect, the high pressure behind the paint results in less accuracy and more paint used. Special nozzles can mitigate this somewhat, but in general, these sprayers are fine for large indoor areas and less so for detail work.
A more versatile option is the HVLP, or high volume, low pressure sprayer. While they use air to push paint out through a nozzle at a gentler rate, they also typically employ a turbine of some kind and a special tip to atomize the paint as it comes out. This results in smaller particles of paint that spatter less. That means more accuracy and no air compressor to attach. With the ability to handle most any interior project and even some exterior jobs, the HVLP sprayer is becoming a more popular mid-range choice.

Setup: Easier Than It Seems
The Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer is the companys most affordable option for sprayers in this class capable of handling larger projects. Recommended for painters who will go through fewer than 50 gallons of paint per year, its aimed at DIYers who paint enough to justify owning their own sprayer rather than renting one as needed, but who arent doing it professionally and frequently.
Startup is more straightforward than the instructions make it seem. Just familiarize yourself with the various switches and parts, and youll be fine following the instructions to get set up.
Unlike some other models, this sprayer unit doesnt come with a wheeled cart.
First, youll need to flush the systemwith mineral spirits if using oil-based, with water if using water-based. We underestimated how much mineral spirits we needed. To complete the flushing sequence and subsequent cleanup , youre going to need two gallons of mineral spirits, which cost us about $30.
Once primed, Graco recommends testing your spray pattern and technique on a large piece of sheet wood before starting your actual project. If you dont have much scrap wood for practicing, you can run water through the system and practice on any surface that can handle some spraying.
There is definitely a learning curve to using the sprayer and getting good results, but we found the companys instructional videos helpful, and the website has a good archive of information.
