I build up the painting from that point with darker and lighter tones until forms are sufficiently revealed. However, I believe passionately that an artist should present about 80% of the image and allow the viewer to fill in the remaining 20%.

What Is Acrylic Gesso
Acrylic gesso is a primer that penetrates and grips to the support and becomes a stable base for painting, with a good tooth that holds the paint. It’s usually available in bright white, black, and clear.
Gesso can be tinted with acrylic paint to form a colored base and can usually be applied pure or diluted about 20%, depending on the effect you are looking for.
When dry, it provides a porous surface that allows a good degree of absorption but with higher resistance to water than paper. It can be used for acrylics, watercolors, gouache, and oils.
Clear gesso primer looks white when wet, but it dries completely clear, creating protection for the surface and a nice tooth to hold the paint.

Understand Values And Tones
Understanding the values and tones of your reference image is the key to a successful canvas painting. A painting is more than just colors on a canvas. It has an emotional tone that you can interpret in many different ways.
Capturing the right tones – the combination of light and dark tones – helps capture the image you’re working on, especially if you’re doing a monochrome painting.
For example, to an untrained eye, an apple may look all red or all green. However, there are darker portions and lighter portions to it, affected mainly by the amount of light. We are emphasizing the untrained eye as you improve identifying the tones as you progress.

How To Cover Your Acrylic Painting
You have to be aware of a few things if you decide to repaint, and to make the decision, is it worth it?
1. The paint surface wont feel the same Once youve lost the tooth of the canvas the paint behaves differently, it doesnt pull off the brush in the same way.
2. You cant use watercolour techniques. Because once the paint surface has built up watery paint just wont behave the same. Some of the most interesting areas in paintings are from the mix of thin transparent paint with thick impasto. This can be key in portraits when trying to create the illusion of depth.
3. The paint can feel chalky. If you paint over the whole canvas with White acrylic, it will feel chalky when you paint over it.
4. You lose the glow of the ground. When you paint Yellow Ochre onto a white canvas the trick is to paint it thick enough to form an opaque layer but thin enough to allow the white from the canvas to shine through and give the colour a glow. When you paint over an existing painting you lose this glow. I know what youre thinking, Ill just paint the coloured ground again. The problem is youll have lost the absorbency of the canvas and gained another layer of unwanted texture.
5. Your paints get slippy. Because Acrylics are plastic-based when they are built up in layers they create a hard, shiny surface. This is rubbish to paint on. Period.
