How To Paint In Acrylic

How To Manage Your Palette

Acrylic Painting Techniques

Managing your palette means keeping colors organized. If done correctly, your mixing will be easier and less chaotic. There are several methods artists use to organize hues. Ill share two useful tips that work well.

Place paint around the outer edges of the palette, while reserving the inner-space for mixing. In the demo I placed similar colors next to each-other, and put the white off on its own. This, in theory, helps to keep the colors less contaminated.

The mixing area can be divided into spaces that are dedicated to specific hues. This can be done vertically, horizontally or quadrants. Having zones will help you mix more efficiently and lessen the chances of making a huge mess.

Slow Drying Acrylic Paint

This is one option to consider. Its not the cheapest option as you will have to get new acrylic colours instead of buying a medium to mix into paints you already have.

Goldens Open Acrylics increase the open working time of acrylic paint so that they are similar to oils. This means that paint can take between a few hours and a few days to dry, depending on how thickly it has been applied.

These paints are artist quality, with a high pigment load and a thick consistency.

Open Acrylics are the slowest drying acrylic paints, because of this they are perfect for use with the wet on wet blending technique that I will outline later in this guide.

Acrylic Mediums Pastels Gels And Additives

When learning how to paint with acrylics, keep in mind that most brands of acrylics come in a range of viscosities or bodies. Soft or medium body is fluid, creamy and smooth heavy body is thicker, buttery and retains brushstrokes extra or super heavy body is very thick and ideal for impasto applications. The following products can be used with acrylics of any viscosity to create an almost limitless variety of effects.

Mediums are mixed with paint for thinning and glazing, and can be used as an adhesive for collage and mixed media work.

  • Matte mediumdries flat without a glossy shine
  • Gloss mediumdries with a glossy shine
  • Blending mediumthins the paint while increasing open time to aid blending
  • Flow improvermakes the paint flow evenly and quickly

Pastes and gels are mixed with paint to add texture or to increase or retain thickness of the paint while adding transparency and lengthening drying time.

  • Gel mediumthickens and adds transparency
  • Heavy geladds texture, allowing the paint to hold its peaks
  • Modeling pastea very thick additive that allows the artist to create highly textured effects that dry to a flexible film

Retardant is mixed with acrylics to slow the drying time and is useful for wet-into-wet techniques too much may result in a film that never dries properly.

Many other additives are available, offering the artist a lifetime of experimentation and discovery.

Brush Control Techniques With Acrylic Paint

The next step to getting started with acrylic paint is to get comfortable with your brushes. I’ll walk you through some basic brush control techniques to practice and by the end, you’ll have a good idea of how to use the different types and sizes of brushes used for painting acrylics.

Don’t worry if your strokes aren’t perfect, this is all about having fun and getting comfortable with your brushes!

Before we dive into each different brush type, I wanted to share one of my top acrylic paint tips with you. To get more control with acrylic paint, add water to your brush.

This might surprise you since acrylic paint is totally different than watercolor. But one of the benefits of acrylic paint is that it’s water-soluble. This means that you’re able to mix water in while the paint is wet and it won’t change the structure of the paint too much.

Now let’s move into the different brush strokes and types of brushes for acrylic paint.

The Best Brushes For Painting With Acrylic Paint

How to do Your First Acrylic Pour Step By Step Guide

Brushes can be overwhelming. There are so many different options that it can be tricky to know what you need. We suggest that you start with a few good and versatile brushes and then begin to build your collection once you get more used to what each brush can do. As for which brand you should choose, there are several options, but we recommend Grumbacher or Winsor and Newton brushes for good quality. Synthetic brushes are the way to go for good quality.

For starters, you can look into the following brushes:

  • Acrylic liner brush
  • Acrylic round brush
  • A palette knife

Your brushes are your second greatest tool in creating a beautiful work of art, so you must take good care of them.

How to Care for Your Brushes Properly

Caring for your brushes involves cleaning, drying, and storing them correctly. You are using acrylic paint, which makes cleaning your brushes really easy because it is water-soluble. All you need is some mild soap and water. You must clean your brushes immediately after using them because dried paint is nearly impossible to clean.

When you are drying your brushes, it is best to lay them down flat. Laying your brushes horizontally can prevent water from running down into the ferrule and destroying the glue. This water can also cause the lacquer on the handles of your brushes to chip and peel and can cause the wood to swell up.

Watercolor Vs Acrylic Paint

Many beginners often wonder is acrylic painting easier than watercolor?

The short answer is acrylics are much easier for beginners.

While watercolor and acrylic paints share similarities , painting in watercolor can be very technical, with a steeper learning curve with both the pigment and the amounts of water being used.

Some watercolor teachers even recommend their students take a couple of classes on acrylics before jumping right into Watercolor!

10 Simple Acrylic Painting Tips | Do’s & Dont’s, Be a Better Painter

Brushes: Synthetic materials such as nylon are the best choice for acrylic paintbrushes. Stiff brushes are good for applications of thick paint soft and supple ones are good for applications of thinned paint. Acrylics are harder on brushes made of animal hair, which can swell and lose its spring when soaked in water.

Palette: The acrylic painter needs a palette thats flat and impervious to water. Plastic palettes designed for acrylics are available some have lids or sealable compartments to prevent drying. Enameled butcher trays, thick glass, and plastic cutting boards also work well. Aluminum pans from frozen pies and melamine plates can work in a pinch. Avoid wooden palettes, which absorb water.

Surfaces: One of the advantages to working with acrylics is that you can apply them to almost any stable, nongreasy surface. Water-absorbent surfaces, such as wood, need to be sealed beforehand. Preferred painting surfaces include artists canvas, hardboard, fiberboard and heavy watercolor paper that has been prepared with a good quality acrylic dispersion primer. Using prestretched gessoed canvases saves time, but theyre often not of archival quality.

Water container: A large, unbreakable water container is a must. Change the water frequently so you dont contaminate the colors on your palette.

Experimentation Is The Key

If this is your first time using acrylic paints, it is best to do some experimentation on paper before leaping to your canvas. Experimenting in this way will help you gauge how quickly the paint dries, how the blending works, and how the paint feels on the brush. Practicing can also help you master different brush strokes. You can easily find step by step painting tutorials online to give you some inspiration. It can be a good exercise to paint swatches of all of your different colors onto a canvas to help you determine how opaque each color is, how quickly they dry, and how easily it applies onto the canvas surface.

Acrylics are water-based, which means that unlike oil paints, they can be thinned with water and cleaned with water. They are also non-toxic and non-smelly. For the eco- or health-conscious, this makes acrylics a more attractive option. Acrylic paints can mimic the quality of oil paints, but without the toxicity and clean-up issues that go along with oils. When thinned with lots of water, acrylics can also mimic the qualities of watercolor.

Acrylic paint dries quickly. This can have its advantages and disadvantages. For one thing, painting with acrylics is great if you like to work quickly. It is also very easy to “go over” if you’ve made a mistake. The main disadvantage of the quick drying time is that sometimes it can be difficult to blend colors, but this can be remedied by using Open Acrylics or by mixing in an acrylic medium, like retarder or wetting agent .

Acrylic mediums can also be used to alter the sheen of the paint, causing them to have high gloss or matte sheens. There are many enticing gels, mediums and pastes on the market to mix with acrylics to enhance and alter the quaility of the paint.

Question 9 Of 1: Download Article

  • 1Yes, work in layers to create texture and dimension. When you’re working with acrylic paints, it’s best to work in layers. This will allow you to create dimension, like creating shadows and highlights in a tree by using varying shades of green.XResearch source
  • Leave enough time for each layer of paint to dry before you paint another layer over it. Thin layers will dry in about 30 minutes, while thick layers will take over 1 hour to dry.
  • 2Add dark colors and broad shapes, then move to light colors and detail. When you start painting, lay down your outlines, large shapes, and any shadowy areas first. Use the darkest colors that you’ve laid out on your palette. Then, as you add each new layer, gradually lighten the colors, adding detail, texture, and highlights.XResearch source
  • Acrylic paints don’t mix once they’ve dried. If you start painting with the lightest colors first, then go over them with darker colors, the darker colors will just cover up the lighter paintâthey won’t become lighter.
  • This is just a general ruleâsometimes if you add too much highlight, you may need to go in and fill in a little detail with a darker color. That’s totally fine!
  • If you’re used to working with watercolors, you’ll notice that this is the opposite of that process, where you always work from lightest to darkest.

Student Grade Acrylic Paints Are Perfect For Beginners

Student grade acrylic paints are a better and relatively affordable alternative to craft paints. Unlike craft paints, student grade acrylic paints are made by the same manufacturers as professional or artist-grade acrylic paints. As a result, these paints have a much higher level of pigmentation, and they typically have the same names for colors as professional paints. With student grade acrylic paints, you can mix and blend your colors with much greater ease, and your final piece will be vibrant and beautiful.

Student grade paints are great for beginners because it can be less intimidating to use less expensive paint. It can sometimes feel like you are wasting your expensive paints on experimentation in the early stages of learning to paint, so starting with more affordable paints is a great option. Not only this, but many student grade acrylic paints share the names of colors with the more professional grade paints, which means you can familiarise yourself with the colors you enjoy using. When you then feel ready to upgrade to professional-grade paints you can easily buy the same colors, which can save you some money and time of trying to find an exact equivalent.

    How To Blend Acrylic Paint

Learn how to blend acrylic paint: which supplies you need and the steps to take to create seamless gradients.

Acrylic paint straight from the tube dries fast, which makes it difficult to blend. Luckily, there are multiple ways to make acrylic paint dry slower making it easier for you to create blends and gradients in your paintings.

Blending is an essential technique in painting, especially if you want to achieve realism. Aside from creating smooth gradients in skies or backgrounds, youll want to blend paint to create soft edges. A soft edge is a natural blur, where one object transitions to another. Use blended edges to create distance, focus and objects appear more three dimensional. An example of where you might use this technique is if you are painting a seascape, quite often where the sea meets the sky at the horizon, the edges appear slightly blurred together.

Acrylic paint can be versatile and used with techniques such as blending, as long as you have the materials to do it.

    Using Acrylic Paint Safely

Acrylics are generally very safe to use, but some pigments can be toxic if not properly handled.

Also, just to put things in perspective, pigments are more concentrated in professional-level paints and lesser in student quality ones.

    • The pigments to be aware of are:
    • Cadmium pigments
    • Phthalo Blue and Green

Regardless of the pigment, here are some safe ways to handle any type of paint, so that youre in the habit of using them properly:

    • Wash hands thoroughly with water and soap after use
    • Avoid eating/drink while painting
    • Keep paint out of eyes, mouth, and lungs
    • Use eye protection if your doing something like splatter painting

As with all art material, keep paints away from small children. Young students should be monitored and taught safe handling techniques.

If youre looking for safe acrylics for kids, please check for the Approved Product seal on the paint bottles.

This Simply Means Altering Acrylic Paints Into Fabric Paints

Fabric Medium is an acrylic polymer liquid blend, that has no pigments, which you can mix with your acrylic paints to give your painted fabric a beautiful soft feel. The fabric can easily be hand or machine washed when the paint is dry. Once the fabric medium has been mixed with your acrylic paint it will improve the use and also the flow of your paint when applied to the fabric.
