However, due to affordable local contractors in the U.S, sometimes its not worth the time and effort so dont forget that Pro Floor Tips can help you request a free quote if you prefer to go that route. Clean And Prep Your Space

Using medium-grit sandpaper and a sanding sponge, lightly sand the wood floor to dull the surface before painting.Clean the entire floor by vacuuming up debris and mopping the space. Use a damp rag with warm soapy water in a bucket to remove any difficult spots. Thoroughly rinse the floor with fresh water. Allow the floor to dry overnight. Tape off any molding or baseboards.

Allow The Paint To Harden

Floor paint can take up to 10 days to harden so youll want to fence off the room thats been painted to ensure nobody accidentally walks on the freshly painted wood floors. Going into the room too early can create scuffs and other imperfections on the surface. If youre painting the entire floor, consider painting one room at a time to make it easier to avoid these newly painted areas.

Choose Your Paint Color And Finish

How (and When) to Paint Wood Floors

Painting hardwood floors white is a homeowner favorite. However, whatever color you decide upon, be sure to test out a sample of the color you choose. Once you start painting, it is very difficult to remove paint from a wood floor, especially an unfinished one. When choosing a paint finish for your wood floor, keep in mind that a high-gloss finish is more slippery than a low-luster satin finish.

What Materials Should I Use

Generally, you’ll want to have on hand a large paint roller, a cutting brush to get any edges or corners of the floor, primer, plenty of paint in your desired color, a finish, and an anti-slip topcoat.

When it comes to the primer, which will help fill in any especially raw areas of the floor before you start painting, Varano says you should tint it to the color of the paint you’ve chosen .

Varano typically recommends water-based paint, which contains fewer chemicals than oil-based paint and is the paint more standard for indoor projects.

Layering on an anti-slip polyurethane as the final coat will also help to ensure safety and a bit more longevity.

How To Paint Wood Floors Beautifully To Last

Follow these simple tips to paint wood floors that will last!

Im sharing how to paint wood floors today. I just made a last minute decision to paint the wood floor that was hidden underneath carpet on the third floor of the North House Lodge. Wowsa, what a difference it made in the room!

Painting wood floors isnt hard if you follow a few tips and use the right products. The steps are the same to paint over previously painted wood floors or painting over bare wood floors. I also added a carpet runner to the stairs of the North House Lodge. I love how it turned out.

The first thing we tackled in renovating the other side of our old duplex was paint and flooring. Theres lots of hard work and achey bones that go along with this stage of work and not so much of the wow factor. Unless you pull up dirty pink carpet to reveal original wood floors that are about 167 years old.

All of the sudden, this part of the work became fun!

This is what the 3rd floor bedroom looked like the day we walked in. If you remember from my first post The North House Lodge the place came furnished. Ive saved what items I could use, donated lots of it, and tossed plenty.

We call this room the loft, it has three twin beds and was part of the original home built somewhere around 1850. That was a working chimney at one point and it runs right through the middle of the room.

Can you see the potential in this room? I did as soon as I walked in.

How Long Will A Painted Floor Last

I painted an old wood floor covered in old varnish with acrylic paint ...

This will depend on a number of factors including how well the floorboards were prepped, what paint was used and how much traffic the floor can expect. But a rough estimation is around two years.

Obviously, a floor that is well prepped and painted and has low traffic will last longer. And even after a couple of years you are unlikely to need to repaint the whole floor, just the areas that get a lot of use. A

lot of the floor will typically be under furniture or rugs so wont need repainting. All youll need to do is repaint the areas that have worn, which is a relatively quick and easy job. However, it is worth noting that when you repaint, the new paint may not match the colour of the old.

If this is the case then it might be worth doing the whole floor again. But if it was well-prepped and painted the first time, the job should be much quicker the second time around.

Will I Need To Sand The Floors

Some floors might have a finish meant to help protect from scratches, scuffs, spills, and water damage. If the floors have a wax or peeling finish, which helps make wood floors more durable, Varano says you’ll need to at least do a light sand to remove it before you begin painting. Micetich and Varano recommend renting a mechanical sander to get the job done quicker and more efficiently.

Once you’ve finished, vacuum the dust and thoroughly clean the area before painting. Varano recommends using a professional-grade hardwood floor cleaner and a buffer with a maroon pad that will also help strip the floors, and remove any dirt, grease, and films on the floor.

How To Paint Floors The Right Way

  • Sand the floor. Before you start painting, you’ll need to sand wood floors to remove any varnish or UV finish. Steckel recommends renting a floor sander to save both your back and your floors.
  • Clean the floor. After sanding, you want to remove as much dust as possible by vacuuming, sweeping, vacuuming again, and then lightly mopping the floor. Let this sit for a few hours to dry and so the dust can settle. Then vacuum one more time.
  • Patch any holes. Unless you’re going for a rustic look, fill in any cracks or holes with wood filler. Once dry, prime these spots first and let them dry.
  • Prime the floor. Next, prime the floor with an oil-based primer. Wear a properly fitted mask to ensure ventilation.
  • Apply the paint. Once the primer is completely dry , apply your first coat of paint. Most paint brands offer a “floor enamel” or a specific paint formulated for floors. Remember to select the finish you want, whether matte, glossy, etc. Let the paint dry. Depending upon the paint and color you’re using, you may need to apply a second coat.
  • Add the topcoat. Once the paint is completely dry, apply a top coat that works with the primer you used. Avoid putting oil on top of latex, as it will flake immediately. If you’re not sure, check with your paint store for a topcoat recommendation.
  • Let each coat dry completely. And enjoy the new look!

    Choosing The Right Paint

Depending on what kind of surface youre painting youll need to choose paint that is right for your particular floor.

Our GoodHome durable floor and stairs paint is perfect for wood, laminate, or tiles. The formulation is designed to be ultra-durable so it can survive the everyday heavy footfall. For concrete floors, like garages, the Ronseal diamond hard range is super tough so it’ll stand up to oil leaks and fuel spills.

Newly laid concrete has to be left for a month in order to set and dry properly. Once youve left it a month, use a wire brush to remove any dust.

    1. Start by cleaning the floor with a stabilising solution if its bare, or if its painted wipe it down with white spirit. Follow the instructions on the tin for mixing and applying. Dont forget to wear gloves and goggles when using chemicals. Leave it to dry completely before moving to the next step.

    2. Use a roller or paint brush to apply your paint, depending on how big your floor is you might find a roller is quicker. Start at the furthest wall away from the entrance and move backwards towards to door otherwise youll paint yourself into a corner!

    3. Wait four to six hours for the first coat to dry before adding another. For the best results, apply three coats.

    4. Let your floor dry fully before you walk on it or move your furniture back.

    How To Get Started Painting

How to paint a Faux wood Floor Tutorial

Now that youve gotten this far, youre ready to begin. Follow these steps:

    • Edges need to be cut accordingly. Take the paint brush and cut in at the wood floor edges with the white paint. A good idea would be to paint approximately 2-4 inches of the wooden floor from the wall around the whole room. Later, the painting process is much easier after the outline has been created.
    • Begin rolling the paint. Generously pour the white paint on the paint tray and begin to roll the paint on the floor. Keep the angles straight and paint smoothly along the wood grains, so the paint application is even and sleek. Then, leave the area alone and let it dry for about 24-48 hours or the recommended time suggested by your brand of paint. Be sure that it is dry enough to be walked on.Is the white paint looking a little dull or needs more strength? Once the previous paint application has dried, roll another layer of the white paint on. Let it dry completely.

A successful paint job is highly dependent on proper preparation, cleanliness, and careful consideration of the painting itself as well as everything around it. Bring the wooden floor of choice to life with a white-paint finish that will take away any dullness and weariness. You can brighten up any room with a newly painted white floor that looks sleek, clean, and modern. In many cases, a fantastic paint finish can look a lot better than the wood itself.

Step Two: Determine The Width Of Your Painted Stripes

If you plan to paint stripes, like I did, choose the width of the stripe you want and work in sections using just one color at a time. I chose to make my floor stripes three boards wide for a thick presentation.

You can get totally creative here! For more complicated stripe patterns, you can add additional colors, vary the widths of each stripe, or even dilute the paint color with white as you go down the line for an ombre effect.

How Many Coats Will I Need

The final amount of coats you apply will depend on the starting color of your floors and the paint color you’ve chosen the darker the wood, the more paint you’ll need to apply, especially if you’re using a lighter color paint. Micetich says to use at least three to five coats.

Quick tip: Varano says it’s important the weather isn’t too hot before you begin painting, otherwise the paint will dry too quickly and smudge. Also, if there’s direct light coming in through a window, pull the shades down to mitigate the heat.
