Which Material Is Best For A Custom Spray Painting Stencil
The most common material for stencils is Mylar and for good reason. It is flexible, durable, easy to clean and long lasting.
10mil Mylar is our preferred thickness for its flexibility, durability and versatility.
Other options include adhesive backed mylar, magnetic, acrylic or wood stencils. Mylar, even though thinner, will be more durable than acrylic or wood.

It would be best to use a paint that was flat so that when the pattern was applied to the surface, it would have a more striking effect.
How To Spray Stencils On Wood Or Stone
To stencil a design neatly with spray paint, the stencil must rest completely flat against the object that’s. If the project surface isn’t flat to begin with, such as a stone or a rounded piece of wood, keeping the stencil in place may prove a bit tricky. A removable spray adhesive helps premade stencils stay put, while a homemade stencil made from painter’s tape or contact paper conforms to the shape of the project piece, no extra adhesive required.

Here we stenciled a plastic bin for our friend Grant to take to the farmers market with his coffee cart.
Is Spray Adhesive Required
You apply spray adhesive, which allows you to reposition it as needed. Its also better than masking tape, as it will stick directly to the surface with ease.
However, do note that some paint spray adhesives are meant to be used only in certain weather conditions so make sure you can state this on the label.
Spray adhesive is a must-have when you need to make a stencil quickly. Double-sided tape, on the other hand, will not work at all when it comes down to getting your stencil absolutely flush with the surface. Thats why spray adhesive is pretty much your only option.

Introduction: Creating Complex Spraypaint Stencils By Hand
These instructions cover each step in creating complex multi-layer stencils from any source image. I’ve been working with stencils for many years now, have tried about every trick out there, and have arrived at a technique that really works for me, and I walk you through it in great detail in these instructions. The technique described here involves a lot more pre-planning and finesse, so it’s probably not best for an artist looking to just bust something out quickly, but if you’re looking to push your stencil technique to the next level I’m hoping it will help you out. Testing The Sprayer Before Use
Its always a good idea to test out something new before actually using it, such as our stencil and paint sprayer combination. In order to make sure youll get the look that youre going for, set up the stencil on some flattened cardboard first.
Then apply spray adhesive onto the back of your stencil and position it onto the cardboard. Be sure to press firmly in place so that it doesnt come off later when you need it most.
One should for example, start the stroke of a paint sprayer about 12 inches away from the surface you choose and complete the stroke without stopping. This will allow an even coat without any pooling from being too close.
If you want to test out the patterns beforehand, I recommend doing it on an area other than your wall. This way, you can experiment with the positioning of your cans or adjust any settings or effects without damaging your wall in any way.

How To Do It Yourself
So now its your turn! Below is a simple how-to guide on making stencils at home. Whether you want to spray paint something on your skateboard or youre looking for a fun activity to do with your family, lets get creative.
Start with a few must needed supplies: a can of spray paint, an X-Acto knife, card stock paper , scotch tape, a self-healing cutting mat , and your design.
A few things that are not must-needs but would be helpful: disposable gloves, a garbage bag, and painter’s tape.
Step 1: Find your stencil design. is your best friend here. Search ________ stencil and you most likely will find something that works. Letter stencils are great , or you can try to search something like fist stencil which is what I did for my example below.
Step 2: Print the design and use small pieces of scotch tape to tape it to the center of your card stock paper .
Step 3: With your self-healing cutting mat underneath, carefully trace around all of the black area with your X-Acto knife.
Step 4: Peel off the loose pieces as you go so you know what is already cut. Remember, you want plenty of negative space, opens a new window when cutting out stencils.
Step 5: You dont need to be super accurate with your cutting, so no worries if you make a mistake . You also dont need to cut everything from the design you printed out – this is a great time to customize the design and tweak the image so you can make it your own.
Spray The Stencil With Paint

Make sure your spray paint is well shaken before starting. Do a test spray on scrap paper or cardboard beforehand.
Spray your stencil in short bursts from 10-15 inches away from the painting surface. Spraying in short bursts will help avoid dripping paint and bleed under the edges of the stencil. It also allows you to layer on paint in a controlled manner.
