The Best Way To Repair Car Paint Chips

My cars paint is chipped. Whats the best way to repair it?

One of the most common questions we get is from car owners who notice that their cars paint is chipped. They want to know the best way to repair car paint chips. They often wonder if they can do it themselves or if they should have the chipped paint repaired professionally.

Car paint was never designed to last forever. On a daily basis, it is assaulted by environmental pollutants, chemicals, and rocks. All of this results in the paint getting chipped and peeling off. The absence of paint on a spot on the cars surface is known as a paint chip or a rock chip.

We highly recommend repairing rock chips during regular detailing services and before applying a ceramic coating. Youll want the surface to look as good as possible before applying the coating, so its worth it to take the extra step to repair the paint chips beforehand.

What Makes Up The Paint On Your Car

The paint on your car is not like the paint on your rooms walls. It is made up of several layers. Each one of them has its function. Heres a brief explanation of the paint of a typical road car. You need to know this before learning how to repair chipped paint on your car.

    • The Primer is the first layer of paint that goes on to the body panels of your car. It is light grey. It smoothens the surface of the metal and provides a base for the color coat to stick. It also acts as an anti-rust agent.
    • The Color Coat is the paint of your car that you can see. There can be up to 5 coats of the color coat to make the paint last longer.
    • The Clear Coat goes on top of the color coat. It protects the paint underneath and gives it a shine.
    • A Ceramic Coat can be found on some cars. It is meant to make the paint hydrophobic, and dust and mud resistant.

DIY Paint Chip Repair: How to Fix Paint Chips on a Car

Using the Dr. Colorchip system, I will actually smear the paint on with a diaper cloth. I admit I have a little fun with this at car shows. Often, Im working on multi-million dollar cars, and Ill just smear paint all over the front of someones car without warning. I know the excess paint is going to come off, but the car owner isnt always so sure. Sometimes its a good joke, sometimes not.

Once I smear the paint on, I wait until its dry usually 15 minutes or less. The paint should be smooth, not tacky. Next, I have a clean section of cloth in one hand, a microfiber cloth in my other hand, and a bottle of the blending solution handy. Ill put a few drops of solution on the cloth and start gently removing the excess paint. I make sure the cloth is very flat along the cars surface to avoid removing paint from the chips. I continue adding a few drops of solution until I remove all the excess paint. Once every couple of minutes, I gently wipe the hood with the microfiber cloth to remove the solution and see which areas still have excess paint.

Use compounding agent to level out the surface. Much like feather sanding, this is the ultimate move that is going to smooth out between the damaged surface and its surrounding. Of course, you should not use the compounding agent on the damaged surface.

Learn how to spray. There is no exact way to teach you. The easiest method would be to try spraying on other surfaces to learn the techniques required to accurately spray your car.

Once more, clean the area with wax and grease remover, make sure the surface is as smooth as silk before spraying the colors on.

When Is It Not A Good Idea To Fix Damaged Car Paint On Your Own

It is tempting to cut the visit to the body shop and save money doing car paint chip repairs at home. However, there are cases where this can do more harm than good. If you have any of the following, just go to a professional and DO NOT do it at home.

    • If your paint has a large number of chips on it.
    • If the paint on the car has started to peel off at multiple locations.
    • If rust is appearing under the damaged paint.
    • If the sheet metal under the paint has been exposed.

As a general principle, rust is the worst enemy of sheet metal as well as the paint of your car. If you see it, run for cover.

    Alternative Solution : Repainting

While slightly more costly than a wrap, repainting your car does a more thorough job of removing imperfections, with more permanent results. This method is however more labour intensive, so expect that your car will be in the workshop for a longer time.

Depending on where you go and which paint you choose, a full repaint will cost anywhere from S$1,000 to over S$10,000. The good news is, if you plan to sell your car in the future, a newer paint job can fetch you a higher price.

What Youll Need For Diy Paint Chip Repair

At an auto parts store, youll find a display of auto touch-up paints. Look up your cars year, make and model in the booklet at the display. Youll find a list of factory colours that cars like yours were painted that year. If you have a white vehicle and there is only one white listed for it, just buy that one. If you dont know the colour number for your car, youll have to find it on your vehicle identification plate. This can be challenging. The plate may be located under the hood on the cowl, near the radiator shield or on the jamb of the drivers door. Some owners manuals will tell you where to look, or a quick call to your dealer will help.

Once you find the number, buy a small bottle of touch-up paint. If you cant find the correct colour at the display, check with the dealer. Dealers often carry colours for the cars they sell. Also, buy a small can of auto primer. Now just follow our photo sequence to fix that chip, and remember, dont do this repair in the direct sun or if the temperature is below 10° C.

Tip: If you can only find spray paint with the right colour number, you can use it by spraying a bit of paint into the cap and applying it with a fine artists brush.

Protect Your Car From Paint Scratches

Few things are more frustrating than a scratch or chip in a brand new car. If youve recently bought a car, especially a luxury model, you may be wondering how to protect it from the elements. Colorado driving is notoriously hard on cars, and it is all-too-common to have a few dings and scratches in the paneling after a certain amount of time.

Luckily, there are a few things you can do to protect your vehicles paint from unsightly peeling, chipping, or scratching.

  • Vinyl Wrapping for Cars
  • This is one of the more expensive options, but it is also the most effective against rock chips and big scratches. A clear layer of vinyl is applied to high-risk areas of the car, such as the hood and bumper. You can do the work yourself, but it is not recommended if you are inexperienced. A poorly applied wrap will look far worse than a tiny scratch.

Apply a premium paint sealant to the car, especially areas more prone to scratches and chips. Paint sealant is similar to car wax, but it is designed to last much longer. Unlike wrapping, you can easily do this step yourself. However, most professional seals offer better protection since they tend to dry harder than at-home ones.

Regularly waxing your car offers protection against micro-abrasions such as those that occur when washing and drying. Always apply wax to a clean, dry car. While there is no set interval for waxing, you should aim for at least twice per year .

  • Protect Door Edges and Bumpers
  • What To Do If You Have A Paint Chip On Your Car

Even if you take steps to protect your car, chips and scratches may be inevitable. If you leave these untreated for too long, further damage can occur. Exposed metal framework may begin to rust, and surrounding paint may bubble and start to peel.

As soon as you notice a scratch, take your car to a licensed dealer. While you can repair chips and scratches at home, it is best to go to a professional who can precisely match the paint of your car.
