Measure Your Tiled Area
To buy the right amount of paint and primer, you need to know how big an area youll be covering. Measure the length of the tiled area by the width, and multiply the two measurements together. That will give you the surface area.
Plan to give your tiles at least two coats of both paint and primer to get a good finish. That means youll need to multiply your surface area by two to get the coverage for each. When youve got that number, youre ready to go shopping!
Make sure you choose a primer thats suitable for the material your tiles are made of. When it comes to paint, epoxy or oil-based paints work best.
Check the cans of both paint and primer for the areas they will cover. Then youll know how many of each you need to buy.
Pro tip: Its always wise to check the specific paint youre buying to get an idea of coverage. But as a rule of thumb, 250 milliliters will usually be enough for an area of about 2 square meters.

Apply A Primer To The Bathroom Tile
No matter the type of bathroom tile, you should always apply a primer before painting. However, before applying primer to stone tile, you need to seal the stone with a sealant. Using a sealant on stone tile gives the primer and paint a less porous surface for a smoother finish. The paint also clings to the surface, keeping it from peeling off.
The type of primer that you use should match the paint. For example, if you plan on using latex paint, look for a latex primer. If you want to use acrylic paint, use an acrylic primer. The primer should also be made specifically for use on tiles.
Apply the primer to the tile and allow it to dry. The primer container should list the recommended drying time, which is typically between one and four hours.

Do Painted Tiles Look Cheap
It depends on the painted tiles. Sometimes, painted tiles can look high-end and quite fancy. However, they can also be poorly done, which makes them look cheap. Furthermore, this paint will also come off sooner than your typical paint so youll need to re-paint regularly, or it will start peeling and fading.
Of course, worn-down tile often looks quite cheap and so the upkeep is vital to keeping the tiles looking fresh and well done.
Of course, painting tile is much cheaper than replacing it. So, this is an economical method for freshening up a bathroom. As long as the tile isnt cracked, you can repaint it to make it look new. You can often spend less than $100 on a whole bathroom. If youre just painting the shower, you can spend much less.
On the other hand, retiling a shower or bathroom can cost upwards of $1,000, depending on the material. Retiling is often far out of the budget for most homeowners, though you can likely repaint it in a way that fits within your monthly budget.

How Do I Update My Tile Without Removing It
One of the great things about painting tile is that you dont have to remove it. Kinda like my kitchen counter update that cost less than $50!
AND, if you live in an apartment or rental home like I do, chances are you CANT remove your shower tile surround! This is a great way to add your own style to your apartment!
And, REMEMBER, ALWAYS ask your landlord if you can make any changes to your apartment or rental home!
First, be sure to tape off the ceiling, shower edges, and top edge of the shower walls. On the walls, you may want to double the tape to be extra safe from accidental paint swipes.
Then, using your Zibra Round Paintbrush and KILZ primer, paint the grout. After painting the grout, paint the tiles with a roller.
If the temperature inside is higher than 77 degrees, you may want to do one section at a time, like I did. You dont want the paint drying too fast, which will prevent a smooth paint finish.
Does Paint Stick To Shower Floor
Paint will stick to shower floors made from materials that accept paint, such as concrete. However, if the shower floor is made of materials that wont accept paint, such as tiles, you must sand the surface and then apply the paint.
Also, if the shower floor has been subjected to daily use, the paint wont stick. Thats because the shower floor will be riddled with stains, soap, shampoo, and water. All of these things will prevent paint from sticking.
If the floor is wet and riddled with stains, the paint will become loose and blister off. So, before applying paint on a shower floor, scrub, clean, and dry the floor and then apply the paint.
Also, if the shower floor is already painted or sealed, the paint wont stick over it. Thats because the previous paint is moisture-resistant and wont allow the new paint to penetrate the surface and stick. Before applying the new paint, you must remove the previous finish from the shower floor.

Clean And Sand The Tile Before Painting
Thoroughly clean the tile that you plan on painting. You may need to use abrasive bathroom cleaners to get rid of stubborn grease. Get rid of all dirt, hair, and soap scum. After removing debris, wipe the tile and grout with a damp sponge.
The sponge helps collect any remaining residue. Wipe the surface dry with a clean rag before sanding the tile. Sanding is necessary for most types of bathroom tiles, including ceramic, laminate, and vinyl. You dont need to sand glass or stone tiles.
Use a fine grit sandpaper to remove the glaze from ceramic tiles. Sanding laminate and vinyl tile scuffs the surface to help the paint adhere better. If you want to get the job done faster, use a handheld orbital sander or palm sander.
A floor sander is also helpful when painting tile flooring. Whether you use sandpaper or a sander, sand lightly. Sanding lightly keeps you from removing too much material or damaging the tile. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth after sanding to remove dust. Allow the surface to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Do you ever have a project that ended up being so much easier than you expected that youre kicking yourself for procrastinating so long to do it? Painting the ceramic tile floors in our first floor bathroom was one of those projects for me! First Things First: Can You Paint Tile
Absolutely! There are many reasons why people opt to paint tiles. First, it’s a cost-effective upgrade. Painting tiles can spruce up your space and extend the life of tiles in high-traffic areas, like floors, kitchens, and bathrooms.
