The Positives Of Granite
Granite is a beautiful, durable material that can last a lifetime if properly cared for. But what if you want to change the color of your granite countertops or floors? Can you paint over granite?
The short answer is yes, you can paint over granite. But there are a few things you need to know before you get started.
First, because granite is a natural stone, it is porous and has tiny cracks and crevices. That means that painting over granite wont be as simple as painting a smooth surface like walls or cabinets. Youll need to take the time to properly prepare the surface before you start painting.
Second, because granite is porous, it will absorb paint differently than other surfaces. That means youll need to use a special primer designed for use on stone surfaces. This primer will help the paint adhere to the granite and prevent it from being absorbed too deeply into the surface.
Third, because granite is a natural material, it can be difficult to get an even coat of paint. You may need to apply several coats of paint to get good coverage. And even then, the final results may not be perfect. But with some patience and care, you can achieve good results.
So if youre considering painting over granite, go ahead and give it a try! With proper preparation and attention to detail, you can achieve beautiful results that will transform your space.
Should Bathroom Countertops Match Kitchen Countertops
There is no definitive answer to this question. Some people prefer a consistent look throughout their home, with matching countertops in the kitchen and bathroom. Others like to mix things up, with different materials or colors in each room.
Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. If youre unsure which route to take, consult with a professional designer who can help you create a cohesive look that reflects your unique style.
Gather Your Tools And Supplies
You will need to have 600 grit sandpaper and a sanding block to sand the granite to a rough surface. Roughing the surface helps the primer and paint to adhere better. You will also need a mild detergent, sponges with abrasive scrubbing pads, 2-inch foam brushes, a bucket for the cleaning solution, Kilz primer, paint, and sealer. Youll also need brushes, a paint roller, and refills, to apply the primer, paint, and sealer. You will also need painters tape, rubber gloves, scissors, a utility knife, clear caulk, and paint trays. Throw in a thin-tipped artists paintbrush for getting in small crevices.

Scrub The Counter To Remove Old Caulk
Before you begin the painting process, start by cleaning the countertops well using a Brillo pad and a good cleaner to remove any dirt and grease. This ensures you get a perfect, even finish after the painting is done. After thoroughly cleaning the countertop, dry them and allow them some time for air drying. You can remove the old caulk using a utility knife or a caulk remover.
Can You Cover Granite Countertops With Wallpaper
The short answer is yes, you can wallpaper over granite countertops. However, there are a few things to keep in mind before doing so. First, granite is a smooth surface, which means that any imperfections in your wallpaper will be very noticeable.
Second, because granite is so smooth, it can be difficult to get the wallpaper to stick properly. This is why its important to use a heavy-duty adhesive when attaching the wallpaper to the countertop.

Choosing The Color Scheme
Another important step is to choose a suitable color palette that will suit the vibe of your room. So, when you have to pick the paint color, check the color scheme of the room so that they are in line. The look and feel of your granite countertops and paint colors should go hand in hand. Darker shades go well with kitchens and bathrooms as these are high-traffic areas. If youre the granite surface around your fireplace, you may pick any color of your choice that can turn it into a focal point. However, choosing a color that aligns with the existing decor and draws attention is always an excellent idea.

Painting Laminate Countertops: The Bad
Even though our countertops overall look amazing and I absolutely continue to love them, they arent perfect. Im going to get a bit nit-picky here, but Im a perfectionist, its what I do.
Plus I want to share all of the relevant details so you can make the best decision about whether or not this is a project for you.
The biggest issue I have had is some slight yellowing of my countertops, most noticeably in the corner beside our range.
I am not sure what the cause is, but it is something that happened during the initial painting/sealing process. I noticed the yellowing within a few weeks of finishing the countertops and it hasnt gotten worse at all in the months and years since.
The yellowing itself is very slight. There are no yellow, discolored spots there is simply a more yellow undertone than I would like.
It is very subtle. My husband doesnt see it at all. But I do, especially against the white range, white cabinets, and white backsplash areas. It isnt something that bothers me a lot, but is something to be aware of.
The other issue I have noticed is that there are a few areas where you can see light scratches on the countertop finish when the light hits it. This is primarily an issue in the area where the kids like to do craft projects and is only noticeable when the light hits at a certain angle.
This is an extreme close-up of some of the scratches. They are really hard to capture in a photo but hopefully, you can get the idea.
How To Draw Oil Out Of Granite
Try creating a baking soda solution to take care of tough stains on your granite. If the stain is water based, use a mixture of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. If your stain is oil based, use a mixture of baking soda and water to form a paste. Spread your paste over the stained area and let sit for several hours.

Updating Granite Countertops Using Paint
Have you ever wondered if you could update your granite counters without having to replace them? I did, and was able to give them new life when I updated them to look like faux marble counters.
Before you say its ridiculous to paint granite, please know that it was not my first choice . However, this was a DIY update gave us the look we were looking for, at the time that we needed it done.
When we bought our last house, it had a ton of granite countertops, but all of them had lots of brown and cream. They didnt go with all the new colors we put in the house grays and crisp whites and bright colors. They especially didnt go with our brand new kitchen, located just next to the bar area
Our New Kitchen
It would have cost us a fortune to replace them, and we didnt have several thousand dollars to swap them all out. We did replace quite a few of them in the bathrooms, but the two that were in the bar area next to our brand new kitchen didnt make the priority list, and unfortunately clashed with the new pretty quartzite not fifteen feet away. So I decided to paint them to look like faux marble counters. Yes, I know there are many who believe that I shouldnt paint them, as mother nature took a bazillion years to make them, but it was either paint them, or live with the clashing countertops for years to come. This was a great temporary fix while we waited to replace them.

Whats The Best Type Of Backsplash To Update New Venetian Gold Granite
Just like with Cecilia, youll want to make a good colour connection when it comes to your backsplash
- Soft off-white tiles that DIRECTLY match the soft white in your countertop. For a subtle look, match it with warm white grout. If you want to add some visual interest, choose a light to medium-depth grout that matches the taupe in the countertop.
- Taupe tiles that have the same warm violet undertones as the flecks in your countertop. For this look, I would do a soft white grout to add a bit of contrast and visual interest.
- a lot of people look to travertine, but MOST travertine tiles have the wrong undertones for New Venetian Gold and Santa Cecilia.
Countertops With A Leather Finish
Many people choose to go for a leather finish when it comes to their granite countertops. Leathered finish on granite countertops was originally developed for exterior usage. The finish is achieved by using special brushes that eat away at the softer material, leaving behind only the harder elements. It leaves your granite countertops with a subtle yet elegant textured finish that is very durable, low maintenance, and easy to clean. Many of our clients have been installing granite countertops with leathered finish in their kitchen and bathrooms to provide the space with subtle texture and something new to the room! To put a leathered finish on your existing countertops, they would need to be removed and brought to a stone fabricator that offers this service. Make sure they have the right CNCs to perform this service as it is not possible to provide a consistent finish along the whole surface by hand.

In the above example, my client was looking for a paint colour for her cabinets. And of course, I cant FIND the after photos to show you, but maybe my client is reading this and will resend them .

Decide If It’s Worth The Risk
If you like your existing countertops enough to live with them, you might want to pause before grabbing a can of paint. Removing paint from a countertop is nearly impossible, so decide if it’s really the countertop that’s bothering you or if there’s something else that’s an easier fix. Replacing lights, repainting cabinets, and painting walls can make the same old countertop feel brand new. Although tile, laminate, and granite countertops can all be painted, first decide if you want to risk ruining your existing surface if the project doesn’t turn out how you’d planned.
Apply Caulk And Let Dry
Apply fresh caulk around your sink and backsplash. Create a long, continuous bead of caulk around the seam. Make sure you use a kitchen or bathroom caulk that dries clear. The paint will require a full 14 days to cure before using the countertop normally again.

How Do You Keep Granite Countertops Shiny
To put a shine on your granite, pour a little cooking oil on a soft cleaning cloth and wipe it across the countertop. Buff it gently. This makes the counter a little bit stain-resistant and gives it a glossy shine. Even if you know how to clean countertops correctly, your granite will need to be resealed periodically.
Why Would You Do It
There are several reasons why someone might want to paint their granite countertops, not the least of which is covering an ugly color choice. Many times, people choose to paint their granite because they want a fresh look but dont want to pay for new countertops.
Unfortunately, its common for people to get in over their heads with this type of project. Paint simply will not stick to granite unless you take some key steps to prepare the underlying surface. First, you will have to chemically or mechanically etch the granite to promote adhesion. Then, you will have to apply a high-quality epoxy coating or professional polyurethane specifically designed for countertop use.
Unless you know what youre doing, this type of project is fraught with pitfalls. Its very easy to ruin your countertops, especially if youre not a skilled, experienced painter. To be safe, its generally best to hire a professional Denver countertop company to do the task. Unfortunately, this expense will likely offset any savings you might have enjoyed by painting the granite countertops. In many instances, homeowners find that they are better off purchasing new countertops instead of trying to refinish their old ones .

There are a few things that need to be done before you start your project. The first step is to determine what kind of finish you desire in your finished project.
