How to Paint Laminate Countertops

There are many different paints one can use on countertops, each with pros and cons:

  • Water-based acrylic paint convenient to use because messes or mistakes can be cleaned with water and it has less of an odor. The topcoat takes 14 days to fully cure, so you will have to use your new countertops gently for the first few weeks.
  • Two-part water-based epoxy may be intimidating to first time DIYers because you need to mix the two paint components together. It only takes about four days for this paint to cure to full hardness and it does not require a primer! Epoxy fumes are harsh though, so be sure to ventilate the area you are working in very well. Look for brands with lower volatile organic compounds .
  • Water- or oil-based latex house paint if you have half a can of this in the garage, use a coat of primer first and then paint your countertop. This may be the most budget-friendly option.
  • Textured spray paint there are a few brands of spray paint like Rust-O-Leum, Krylon and Giani that are designed to create a textured stone or granite finish. These are easy to use and cost effective. You do need to use a primer and topcoat to increase the strength and durability.

This simple step-by-step tutorial will show you how to paint your kitchen countertops to look like marble, including the exact materials and paint you need.

But I hated our old countertops and there was absolutely no way we could afford to replace them, so I decided to just go for it. And this time, the risk definitely paid off!

We have been using our new counters for a few weeks now and they look amazing you would absolutely never guess that they were painted.

This is what we started with.

Im sure most of you have seen these white and gold laminate counters at some point or another just probably not in the last decade or two! They were terrible.

Im actually a big fan of laminate countertops because they are so incredibly durable but ours were just so horribly ugly and dated. Aside from the terribly gold squiggly lines, the black edges that wrapped around everything managed to make the whole kitchen look cheap.

I lived with these countertops for eight years because I knew we couldnt afford to replace them. We are blessed to have a ton of counter space in our kitchen which is great for cooking, but makes replacing all the counters incredibly expensive.

Which led me to paint.

At this point I pretty firmly believe that paint can save almost anything. Ive painted floors, walls, cabinets, a backsplash, light fixtures, sliding doors pretty much everything.

Now that weve gone over why you shouldnt use concrete paint on your laminate countertops, youre probably wondering what type of paint you can use. The truth is there are better alternatives for painting your laminate countertops. Here are a few of the best options

Acrylic paint is one of the most common paint types used on laminate countertops. This is because it easily adheres to the surface and provides a smooth and durable finish.

Once it dries, it gives the countertop a matte finish which can be very beautiful. You can also buy chalk paint in a variety of colors so that you can personalize your countertop.

Enamel paint is a good option if youre looking for a long-lasting paint job. Its also a good choice for high-traffic areas since its durable.

Ok, so heres the thing. It really doesnt matter what kind of paint you use. I know that sounds like a lame answer, but it is true.

Using a certain kind of paint is not the key to painting countertops so they last. I used a combination of leftover wall paint and acrylic craft paint and both were great. You absolutely do not need to buy a special countertop painting kit unless you really want to.

If you use a good primer and a high quality sealer, it doesnt matter what paint you use on your countertops. The paint is simply the color the sealer is the actual finish that takes all of the abuse.

The key to the longevity of our painted countertops is 100% the resin topcoatI used over the paint. Resin is a thick clear finish that you pour on rather than brushing on.

It gives the finished project a glossy, three dimensional look that more closely mimics the look of a true solid countertop. When the light from the window hits the countertop, it shines through the layers of the finish rather than simply bouncing off.

Working with this type of pour-on finish is more difficult than simply painting on a top coat and has a bit of a learning curve, but the finished look is so worth it.

Countertop Resurfacing System Vs Acrylic

When refinishing laminate or melamine counters, instead of paint, consider an all-in-one countertop resurfacing system, such as Rust-Oleum’s Countertop Transformations. The benefit of these kits is that they are formulated to cover up scratched or dinged countertops by laying down a thick topcoat that securely adheres to a primer coat. These systems go beyond paint they spread a solid layer of decorative rock chips, adhesive coating, and tints that work together to emulate stone surfacing like granite countertops when done. This thick layer effectively covers up all scratches. Unfortunately, these systems can get pricey and can be time-consuming with many steps. You will not be able to use the surface for at least a weeknot even gently.

Alternatively, acrylic paints are your other option. You have two directions to gourethane-reinforced acrylic paint, such as INSL-X Cabinet Coat, or 100% acrylic, flash-bond primer, such as XIM , Bullseye 1-2-3 , or Fresh Start ,

Urethane-reinforced products are more expensive than ordinary acrylic-latex paints you would use on drywall. The urethane will help hide deep scratches better and stick to problem surfaces. INSL-X Cabinet Coat is designed to adhere to plastic, metal, and urethane surfaces without a primer, but laminate and melamine surfaces will still need sanding before painting.

Decide If It’s Worth The Risk

How to Paint Laminate Kitchen Countertops – DIY Network

If you like your existing countertops enough to live with them, you might want to pause before grabbing a can of paint. Removing paint from a countertop is nearly impossible, so decide if it’s really the countertop that’s bothering you or if there’s something else that’s an easier fix. Replacing lights, repainting cabinets, and painting walls can make the same old countertop feel brand new. Although tile, laminate, and granite countertops can all be painted, first decide if you want to risk ruining your existing surface if the project doesn’t turn out how you’d planned.

Dont Make These Mistakes

We attempted painting our countertops with a faux white marble finish in the fall of last year. Although we loved them we sealed them with paste wax the first time around.

This required that the paste wax be reapplied every 3-6 months and I forgot so we were seeing a lot of wear and tear on them.

We needed to sand them down and repaint them and this time we sealed them with oil based varathane! Oh my goodness what a mess. the oil based varathane stained the white countertops an awful yellow glossy color. So we sanded them down AGAIN!

This last tine we sealed them with a water based varathane and far prefer it to paste wax for durability. And bonus it dries clear, no gross yellow countertops for us!

These countertops are STRONG now and shiny and they have stayed in perfect condition for over 8 months now.
