How We Tested The Best Paint Brushes:

2 Best Cut In Paint Brushes. A Paint Brush The Pro’s Use.

We tested the paint brushes based on size, style, bristle type, comfort, and ease of use. We used the paint recommended for the bristles and applied the paint to walls and trim for each brush. After paint application, each brush was cleaned to determine how fast it was to remove paint from the bristles.

Once clean, we examined the brushes again to determine if any damage was evident to the bristle and handle. When the brushes were completely dry, they were stored in their original packaging and examined a few days later to determine if they retained their shape.

For cutting in on window sills, baseboard, molding, and other large-scale projects, this two-inch paint brush from Wooster works wonders. The short handle makes gripping the brush easy and provides more control over the filaments and where you drag the brush, and several reviewers stated how pleased they were with the ergonomic comfort it provides. The ferrule holding the synthetic bristles is made of brass-plated steel, which can be prone to rusting, so this is best reserved for interior projects. Its perfect for cutting in corners and for painting trim without having to tape everything off, explained one reviewer.

Type #: Natural Brushes

The brushs material matters. Natural brushes are made from animal hair, such as badger or hog hair. They tend to hold more paint and ultimately create a smoother finish.

You should choose a brush with natural bristles if youre applying an oil-based paint, polyurethane, top coats, shellac, varnish, enamel, or decorative chalk paint. Its a great option for applying furniture wax, too.

Natural brushes shouldnt be used for water-based paints, as theyll soak up too much of the water and end up being less effective.

Type #: Square Cut Paintbrushes

This is the standard wall paintbrush its bristles are square cut, making it ideal for flat surfaces such as interior and exterior walls, siding, paneling, and flat doors.

These types of paintbrushes tend to be more precise than rollers, so theyll not only create high-quality results, but they may also save you money on paint.

Polyurethane is one of the most durable and protective wood finishes available in the market. It is sold in both water-based and oil-based formulas.

There are subtle differences between the two when it comes to their application. Standard polyurethane can be generally applied with either a brush or a rag.

While applying polyurethane stain, a brush is considered ideal for the purpose as it can help in applying stains in the carvings as well as in the corners. If you want to complete your project with perfection, then you need to invest in the best brush for applying polyurethane on surfaces.

Your brush has a major impact on how the surface will look once it dries. The better your brush and the more control it gives you, the smoother, more even your coat will be.

For having a flawless polyurethane finish you need to invest in the best brush available in the market, as well as your expertise and skills, of course. So you cant pick just any old brush.

A lot of factors need to be considered while purchasing the best brush for polyurethane. For instance, you need to look into the kind of bristle, style, width, kind of ferrule, quality, and handle before you make a purchase.

Match The Bristle Type To Your Finish

Paint brushes are available with either synthetic bristles or natural bristles made from animal hair. If youre using paint or varnish that can be cleaned up with water, then choose a brush with synthetic bristles. If youre applying oil-based varnish or paint, a natural-bristle brush may be a better choice. You can use synthetic-bristle brushes for oil-based paint, but in most cases, natural bristles will provide a smoother finish. Avoid using a natural bristle brush to apply water-based finishes, though. The bristles will soak up moisture and become too soft.

Synthetic brushes are available with nylon, nylon/polyester blends, or Chinex bristles. We recommend choosing either a nylon/polyester blend or, if youre willing to pony up a little more cash, a Chinex- bristle brush. A nylon/polyester blend provides a good compromise between softness, for a smooth finish, and stiffness, for better control. Chinex bristles are designed for optimal performance and easy cleanup. Heres one example of a top-quality Chinex bristle brush.

If youre buying a natural-bristle brush, youll also have a choice of bristle types. We wont get into the different natural bristles available. But in general, spending more will provide you with a better quality brush. For varnishing, we think something like a Wooster Yachtsman China Bristle brush is ideal.

The Best Paint Brushes For A Smooth Finish

After trying a lot of paintbrushes, I have found three paintbrushes that I truly love for getting a smooth finish.

Purdy Nylox Brushes: This brush gives an amazing finish when working with water-based products like latex paint and polyacrylic. It glides on smoothly and comes in several different sizes. I really love the angled brushes they work really well for cutting in around edges and also work well on flat surfaces.

Purdy Paintbrushes: Even though I love Purdys nylox brushes, regular Purdy paintbrushes are almost as good and are a bit less expensive. They are workhorses that are just as good for cutting in when painting walls as they are for painting furniture.

Americana Décor Flat Brushes: I just recently started using these brushes after painting my kitchen cabinets. They dont hold as much paint as the Purdy brushes but the finish is super smooth. These are amazing when you really want a perfect finish.

I know that some people swear byfoam brushes, but I am not a fan. They tend to wear down very quickly and they dont hold as much paint as other paintbrushes. And really I dont think they leave a super smooth finish anyway.

Wooster Soft Tip Paint Brush

Bates Paint Brushes

Wooster Brush Company has been popular for manufacturing high-performing and innovative paintbrushes since 1851. These brushes are immensely popular and have soft brush tips.

These provide an even and smooth finish. The nylon/polyester blend simply resists wear.

The short handle of this brush makes it a lot easier to control the application. It promises good results with both oil-based and latex paints.

The brush tip is designed with ultra-thin filament and delivers a flawless finish without leaving any marks. The bristles have smoothing and leveling properties when using to coat polyurethane.

The brass plated steel ferrule secures the bristles firmly in their place. Steel ferrule ensures that the wood doesnt rust thereby prolonging its lifespan. The handle is made of sturdy plastic and is long enough to provide comfort to the user.

If you are looking for a great brush for coating polyurethane on a surface, then you need to consider investing in a Wooster Paint Brush.

Best Way To Paint Walls With A Flat Brush

Once you have your brush, its important to know how to use them in order to give your walls the best results. Heres some tips to help you learn the best ways to paint your walls using a flat brush.

  • Use smaller amounts of paint – Dip your bristles of the way into the paint and tap the brush on the side of the can to remove excess. This will prevent you from applying too much paint at once and making unnecessary messes.
  • Hold the brush on an angle – Holding your brush at 45 degrees is recommended. This will help you maintain control as you paint.
  • Distribute your paint – Once youve initially applied your paint, youll want to start pushing it horizontally across the surface. This will help create a smoother finish.
  • Try feathering – At the end of each stroke, lift the brush from the wall. This will help prevent any marks or lines being left behind.

Now that you know all about using a flat brush to paint your walls, its time to get started. If you think youd prefer to go the professional route instead, the City Painters is here to help. Contact us here or give us a call to get a quote for your project.

How To Get A Smooth Paint Finish

Of course, even when you are using a fantastic paint brush, painting technique still matters.

Ive seen all kinds of disastrous paint techniques. Ive seen people pour a puddle of paint right onto their furniture and then spread it around with their brush. Ive seen people paint a little here, a little there until eventually the whole piece is painted. And Ive seen people paint in all different directions.

Dont doany of that if you want a smooth finish.

Here is what you do want to do:

Dip your brush in the paint. It should be wet but not dripping.

Then begin painting at one edge of the piece, brushing the paint back and forth with long, even brushstrokes. Work your way across the surface until it is completely painted.

If you are using a roller, the process is the same. Start in one corner, paint in one direction until youve reached the opposite corner.

Once youve finished a coat of paint, dont touch it!

It is so tempting to notice all the spots that arent quite perfect and want to just give them a little touch up.

Dont do it.

Once the paint starts to dry, it becomes tacky and if you touch it or brush it, the paint wont smooth back out.

Once the paint has completely dried, you can repeat the whole thing for the second coat.

Whether using a brush or a roller, when I want an extremely smooth finish, I lightly sand the surface with 320 grit sandpaper before painting the final coat of paint. Then I very lightly paint the final coat of paint with a brush.
