    Gray Paint Undertones Explained

Gray paint is interesting. When you view a tiny swatch of a gray paint color, it just looks gray. But, when you compare one gray paint swatch next to a different gray paint swatch, you begin to see the undertones. The first gray paint swatch may now look blue, and the other may look beige.

As mentioned above, gray paint colors can be either warm or cool, depending on their undertones.

Almost all grays have some sort of undertone. The most common undertones for grays are green, blue, purple or brown. Grays with a blue, purple or green undertone are typically cool grays, while grays with a brown undertone are typically warm grays.

  • Warm gray paint colors make your home feel inviting and cozy. A color from this category is the perfect place to start if youre into the rustic or traditional design styles.
  • Cool gray paint colorshave a slight blue undertone that keeps things light, bright, and airy. Make sure to check out these colors if your decorating style is: costal, modern, contemporary, bohemian, or minimalist.

    How To Choose Light

While cheerful and uplifting, the perfect shade of powder blue can be difficult to select. “Be careful with undertones,” Wadden says. “With this light of a color, too many red undertones will make it look periwinkle. Shades with a hint of yellow keep it looking blue rather than purple.” She notes that you should also make sure it has a touch of gray to it. “You don’t want the color to be too sweet, like robin’s egg or baby blue,” she says.

Nivara Xaykao, associate manager of color marketing and development at Benjamin Moore, says blues are “pretty malleable” but there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Are you keeping any existing colors in the space like the trim and door? If so, she recommends making sure the blue has similar undertones to those colors.

Lighting conditions also change the appearance of blues in a room. “If the space has natural light, is it a predominantly cool or warm cast? Is it bright or pretty shaded?” asks Xaykao. “For example, in cool, dim light, I may opt for a brighter blue with a little green in it to offset the lighting conditions.”

    Benjamin Moore Evening Dove

Evening Dove is another blue gray color that leans almost to violet. I say almost because it only looks violet against the more green blue-grays, I dont think it looks violet on its own.

It reminds me a lot of the ever popular Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore.

    Evening Dove vs Hale Navy

Lets compare Evening Dove with Hale Navy, in a battle of dark smoky blues!

Can I say that I prefer Evening Dove? Its so hard to choose!

For the purpose of this article, which is to find blue grays, I think Evening Dove has a more smoky look than Hale Navy.

    Evening Dove vs Blue Note

Tossing its hat into the ring is Benjamin Moore Blue Note.

Blue Note might be just a touch darker than Evening Dove, and where Evening Dove is warm blue-violet, Blue Note is warm blue-green.

Is it just us, or has blue gray been popping up pretty much everywhere lately? The versatile, moody shade is nothing new, but it seems to be experiencing a major resurgence. And it’s no mystery why. The muted hue goes with pretty much any style of decor, from laid-back bohemian to California casual to Scandinavian minimalist spaces.

For many designers, like LeeAnn Baker and Ally Marks, the aforementioned versatility makes this color choice a no-brainer. Gray-based shades tend to look different in different lights, giving the space a fresh effect that adjusts as the sun goes down and those light switches flick on. Hints of green and even purple can emerge from these blue gray shades depending on the time of day and the type of overhead lighting being used.

While the competition for the industry’s all-time favorite blue gray is pretty fierce, there are more than enough swoon-worthy shades to go around, as this list proves.

Chelsea Gray, a paint color from Benjamin Moores Historical Color collection, is a sophisticated dark gray shade that gives off a feeling of lush elegance. It has very slight undertones of green in it.

It has an LRV of 22, which means it is pretty dark! While the color is gorgeous, there are a few things to consider before painting your home this color.

In a living room or bedroom, you could use Chelsea Gray if the room has a lot of natural light, or vaulted ceilings. In addition, I find it looks best if the room has a substantial amount of white trim .
