Cabinet Restoration & Painting Old Peg Furniture Services

The wooden cabinets were in good condition, but the dark surface was old and the space felt small and dreary.
Start by installing a floor protector, then cover the ceilings to serve as work surfaces. You can use mesh, but I personally prefer construction paper as it protects well, is cheap and easy to throw away/recycle.
Yes, some say I go a little crazy preparing, but I know from experience that its not a waste of time. Remove all doors and drawers, carefully label/number them and put them away for cleaning. Seal the inside of all cabinets with plastic and tape to keep out dust, cover all splash areas with plastic, and seal all equipment to keep it clean.
Go to the cleaning process. Remove any food residue from the cabinet and wash/wipe with synthetic steel wool and soap and water. For heavy duty work, use TSP and water TSP actually agitates grease and removes it more effectively than soap alone. Allow to dry completely before proceeding.

Bolder With Black Cabinet Refacing
Do you wish to create a bolder kitchen look? If yes, why dont you try to reface your cabinets and color them in black as done in the project below?
Take a look at these medium-tone wood cabinets. While they looked nice and compatible with the backsplash, countertops, and floor tiles, they did not seem to be the right choice for the kitchen. That is why a refacing would be nice to improve everything.
This refacing project includes several details. The most obvious one is, of course, the new black color.
About the cabinet boxes, it seems that the project still uses the original one. The one that is replaced is the doors, which are now flat instead of raised-panel. New handles are also installed, and they somehow look compatible with new appliances added along with the refacing project.
Another detail that you should not miss here is the molding. At the top, a new crown is added, enhancing the decorative value to the next level. While at the bottom, a new choice is also added to replace the old one.
What Happens If I Didnt Sand My Cabinets Before Painting
If you dont sand your cabinets before painting, the paint wont adhere properly and can easily chip or flake off. Furthermore, if you dont sand the surface prior to painting, you wont create a smooth finish.
This means that you could be left with an uneven, unevenly textured, or even bumpy finish. If you dont thoroughly sand the surface of your cabinets, the paint then wont be able to properly bond with the surface and can end up peeling off.
Sanding your cabinets will eliminate any dirt, grease, and other grime which can stop the paint from adhering. You should sand your cabinets using medium or fine grit sandpaper. Doing this will remove any old or flaking paint, as well as level out any imperfections or scratches in the wood.
Following the sanding, you should wipe down the cabinets to remove any dust created by the process.

We made faux cabinet boxes, which were budget-friendly yet really added a lot both visually, and for additional storage, says Kyle of @notsomodernvictorian, We also made custom crown molding, inspired by the exterior soffit details of some historic homes. Custom crown really added a unique touch that brings a bit of elegance and charm to the cabinets.

Regular Or Faux Finish
If youre open to spicing up your kitchens look, incorporating a faux finish can transform its style into shabby chic, rustic, provincial, or modern. Crackling glaze, which is available at paint stores, can, with very little effort, give your cabinets a weathered look. Just apply the glaze over a dry base coat, brushing in only one direction , and let it dry. Finish with a flat topcoat of the base color brushed on perpendicular to the glaze. The paint will start to form cracks as it dries, a process that takes about an hour.
Another rustic style is the distressed look, which doesnt require a special paint. This finish is made up of layered colors and spattered dark paint. When the paint is dry, to reveal the colors underneath, distress the finish by hitting it with a chain and lightly sanding in the spots where the cabinets get the most use.
Similarly, the antiqued, slowly aged look can be achieved with some paint magic. Simply dip the tip of a paintbrush in a color lighter than the cabinets and dab the excess onto a cloth until the brush is almost dry, then lightly graze the surface of the detail trim, corners, and seams.
On the other end of the spectrum is a high-gloss finish, which will transform your kitchen into a polished, modern space. To shine up your cabinets, paint a high-gloss clear acrylic varnish over your final coat. This technique will add depth to the color and cover the surface of your kitchen with a glassy sheen.

Is It Cheaper To Paint Or Buy New Kitchen Cabinets
The answer to whether it is cheaper to paint or buy new kitchen cabinets depends on many factors such as cost of materials, difficulty of labor, cost of hiring professionals and condition of the existing kitchen cabinets.
If your existing kitchen cabinets are in good structural condition, then it might be cheaper to paint than replace. Painting requires the cost of paint, primer and any other materials needed, as well as labor to apply the paint evenly.
However, painting is not always the most effective option. If your cabinets are worn or outdated, it might be more cost-effective to buy new cabinets. Since there are so many options for new cabinets, you may also be able to find a style that coordinates better with your overall kitchen design.
New cabinets also tend to be constructed with better quality materials which may provide a more durable product than refinishing your current cabinets. Ultimately, it is important to weigh the cost of both options to decide which is the most cost-effective for you.

Paint The Cabinet Boxes
Youre finally ready to paint! If youre using roughly the same shade as the existing color, two coats ought to do the job. You might even get away with one. Painting over a dark finish with a light color is tougher and could require three coats. Break out a new brush for each coat.
- Pour some trim and cabinet enamel paint into the paint tray and load the brush and roller with paint. Use the brush to cut in along the edges, push the paint into the corners, and leave out roller strokes. Use the roller to apply enamel paint to the large flat surface where possible.
- For the cabinet interior, apply the paint with a smooth-surface mini roller, which leaves a slightly bumpy, orange-peel texture.
- Cover the brush and roller with plastic bags to prevent them from hardening while you wait for the first coat to dry.
- Between coats, sand the surfaces lightly, making sure to clean up the debris afterward.
- Apply a second coat to the cabinet. This coat should provide a perfect, consistent finish without any thin or light areas where wood might show through.
Gray Is A Perfectly Modern Match With White
A dark gray paint color can work well with just about any kitchen design. For the modern look, pair the gray cabinet colors with lighter tones throughout. The white countertop along with a matching sink seems to capture natural light even better thanks to the contrast provided by the dark gray cabinets.

What Would You Change If You Were Painting Your Cabinets All Over Again
First, I have to say that even with these chips, painting our cabinets was one of the most worthwhile DIY projects we have done in our home.
A few coats of fresh white paint instantly updated our worn oak cabinets and also made our dark kitchen feel much brighter.
It wasnt exactly a quick DIY but it made a huge impact for a pretty small price tag.
If I had the chance, I would definitely do it all over again.
And even though the chips and dings really bother the perfectionist in me, they are really very small in relation to the kitchen as a whole.
The photo below is a wider view of the cabinet doors shown above.
So, while yes, the paint is definitely not perfect, those scratches really are small when you look at the big picture.
Even so, if I were to paint my cabinets all over again, I would either try a different paint or use a sealer over the paint for added protection.
How Much Does It Cost To Paint Kitchen Cabinets
Renovating a kitchen is one of the most expensive remodeling projects that you can take on, and replacing the cabinets can account for nearly 40 percent of that cost.
Cabinets for a 10-by 12-foot kitchen can easily top $5,000and your new cabinets may actually be of lower quality than the ones you’re replacing. On the other hand, a few fresh coats of paint can go a long way toward transforming your existing cabinets for a fraction of that price. In fact, the cost of painting should be no more than about $200, plus a weekend or two of your time.

The existing cherry cabinets didn’t fit the homeowners’ style, but they didn’t want to rip them out. Some of the upper cabinets got a coat of white paint, while the island was brightened with a pale blue hue. Stock cabinets and chunky traditional-style legs found online expand the island and create a much-needed seating area. A larger window and the painted cabinets help this kitchen feel airy and bright.
Remove The Doors Drawers And Shelves

- Be sure to mark each drawer front and door with a marker to prevent mixing up the doors. The best place for this mark is behind the hinge location.
- Back out the hinge screws from the cabinet frame and remove the doors.
- Working from left to right, top to bottom, label each one with a numbered piece of tape. Also, number the edges of cabinet shelves and the bottoms of drawers.
- Set aside the shelf-hanging hardware.
- At your worktable, remove the pulls and hinges and save what’s being reused.
- On the doors, transfer the number from the tape to the exposed wood under one hinge.
- Cover it with fresh tape.
