Watercolors The Untamed Beauty

Watercolors are generally considered to be the most difficult to pick up due to the untamed nature of water and the fact you are not able to do much re-working of errors . However, if mastered, watercolors can produce stunningly elegant paintings.

For this reason, I recommend you start out with either acrylics or oils before venturing into watercolors. However, watercolors are a fantastic complement to your acrylic or oil painting as they train a different skill set.

For example, John Singer Sargent was famous for his meticulous portraits using oils, but he used watercolors to paint impressionist and relaxed landscapes and portraits. These watercolor paintings probably felt very refreshing for Sargent who would have been accustomed to the lengthy and tedious portrait painting sessions.

Do I Need Acrylic Medium

There is a huge range of different acrylic mediums out there, they are designed to improve the paint performance or to create some kind of special effect.

I recommend that you get familiar with the acrylic paint before you buy any mediums because it depends on what you feel youd like to improve.

Some of the mediums are for increasing the drying time, for making the paint glossy, making it thick, create texture, or improve the flow. You can improve the flow simply by adding water to the paint.

Another way to use an acrylic medium is to add to high-quality paint to extend the amount. Medium is less expensive than paint, and high-pigment paint can be mixed with a lot of medium without losing its qualities.

    Acrylic Paint Is Fast

    Wave Painting

Like we mentioned earlier, acrylic dries very fast compared to other paint mediums. It is not a contestable fact, and it is the reason this paint is favored over others. Especially when you compare acrylic with oil paints that can take an entire day before it is properly dry, you can work with acrylic without waiting for the paint to dry. Furthermore, when you paint one layer with acrylic paint, you can apply the next quickly.

One: Set Up Your Painting Station

Find a tranquil space in your home or even outdoors, then set up your easel and supplies. Place your canvas on the easel, place a rag or paper towel near the palette, and put your brushes in a sturdy cup near the palette. All of these should be placed in orientation to whether you are left-handed or right-handed, says Webster. If inside, youll want to cover the floor below you with a tarp, an old rug, or garbage bags.

Get Familiar With The Fundamentals Of Art

Acrylic Painting For Beginners Step-by-Step | ARTEZA ART CAMP

I am a big believer in learning efficiently rather than just putting in time for the sake of it. You could practice for years and hardly improve if you dont know what you are doing. This is where the fundamentals of art come into play color, value, composition, edges, brushwork and technique.

These are what I consider to be the core pillars of painting. It is important that you get familiar with them early, as they will help you understand what exactly is going on when your brush hits the canvas. Learning these fundamental areas will benefit every stroke you make.

Here is a summary of the fundamentals:

Color: We are all familiar with color, so much so that we take it for granted. Few people fully understand and appreciate what color actually is.

I find it easier to comprehend color in terms of hue, saturation, and value. These are the three elements that make up a color.

Hue refers to where a color is located on the color wheel. Red, blue, yellow, greenthese are all different hues. Saturation refers to how rich, intense, or vibrant a color is. Value refers to how light or dark a color is.

Learn these three terms and learn them well, as you will encounter them with every artwork you create.

Value: Value is an element of color, but it is generally considered as a separate fundamental area due to its importance to painting. Every color has an underlying value somewhere between white and black. For example, take the following painting by Claude Monet.

Can Be Painted On Any Surface

Another reason that makes this paint stand out is its flexibility. You can apply acrylic paint to different types of surfaces. The only exception is applying acrylic on materials that are glossy or oily. However, it would work well for wood, clothes, and even paper. Some stores even sell specially made acrylic papers designed to hold acrylic paint. You can as well use this paint on watercolor paper. The benefit of acrylic is that it has more flexibility when you consider applying paint over surfaces.

    Night Sky With Clouds Tutorial

Rendering clouds is a little more complex with acrylic. Start by painting the background. Prussian blue is wonderfully deep and perfect for painting night sky. Colours are lighter towards the horizon, so mix in a light toned blue like cerulean. Flick paint onto the dry sky gradientâyou could use a Liquitex splatter brush for this technique. Mix blue toned whites for the clouds. Filbert brushes are brilliant for creating blended edges. Deep blue colours can be neutralised to make grey with Burnt Umber.

    Tell A Story On Canvas

Throughout the process, keep your focal point in mind. What were you trying to achieve? Does it come through to the viewer? The goal should not be to represent something, but to tell a story, to convey feelings. To remind yourself of the story that you are trying to depict, its a good idea to decide on a title that summarizes it from the beginning and keep it in mind. It might help to write it down and keep it in front of you.

    Acrylics The Beginners Choice

Acrylics are widely favored by those just starting out with painting as they are easy to use and do not require any special supplies. The downside is they dry very fast.

    Acrylics may suit you if:

    • You are a complete beginner and do not want to worry about the complexities of oil and watercolor painting.
    • You want an easy cleanup time.
    • You are painting on a limited budget.
    • You enjoy experimenting with mixed media.
    • You are sensitive to the harsh chemicals involved with oil painting.

    The downsides of acrylics are:

    • The paint dries very fast. This means you only have a limited amount of time whilst your paint is responsive on the canvas.
    • Some colors darken as they dry .

I personally started with acrylics many years ago. Below is one of my childhood paintings in acrylics.

I eventually moved to oils after getting frustrated by the quick drying time of the paints. But acrylics were great for developing a broad understanding of painting whilst I was a beginner.

Examples Of Abstract Painting Styles And Subjects

Acrylic Painting Tutorial, Step by Step for Beginners

There are many different abstract painting styles that an artist can explore. Some of the most common abstract styles include:

    Abstract expressionism example

In this painting, the subject is a still life, but its interpreted very loosely. What makes it work is the high contrast of the yellow tablecloth against the darker background. To make it interesting, smaller and medium sized shapes are added. These would be the tea cups, pitcher, bottle and chairs.

    Action painting

In this abstract painting example, you see the figure as the lone subject. What makes this work is the loose is the ability to draw a convincing football player. If the drawing was bad, then it just wouldnt work. The play on light and shadow, especially in the white pants, work well in making it more realistic. Its balanced between abstract and believable.

    Colorful seascape abstract painting

The design and composition make this abstract acrylic seascape work perfectly. Because its interpreted so loosely, almost anything goes. But, the design and drawing skills make it register visually. If it didnt have good bones behind it, the painting wouldnt work that well. Thats why its important to have a good painting foundation that includes excellent acrylic techniques and quality drawing abilities.

How to Make Acrylics More Vibrant Best Acrylic Paint for Blending

The acrylic is applied in transparent washes. Blending opaque acrylic colors are often a touch tricky as youre quite pressed for time.

Its important therefore to only work on areas that you simply know youll have enough time to blend.

To blend two colors, first, paint a block of every color side by side on your support. Where the 2 colors join paint down that line with a clean damp brush to melt the sides.

To blend the colors even further, move the blending brush from side to side or up and down until the specified blending is achieved.

    Try Stippling Or Repetitive Dabbing

Stippling is when you paint tiny dots, usually in a variety of shades or colors, to create an interesting texture that your eye reads as a solid shape from a distance. Its popular with abstract paintings and can also be used to give a realistic finish to subjects in your painting .

To try this technique, you just dip a long, pointy brush into a large dollop of paint and poke the canvas to create a tiny dot. Pushing harder, or using a wider, circular brush, will create larger dots.

Some artists use these dots to show that objects are shining, sparkling, or shimmering. You could use this technique to add highlights to things like waves, waxy fruit, and glass. Add depth to your starry night sky by making a variety of dot sizes in a few different colors, like yellow, gray, light blue, and white.

    Perfecting The Finishing Touches

Acrylic, Step by step, Turtle, Painting

Acrylic paintings are generally easy to preserve. Their water-resistant properties once dry, and their quick drying time means that you do not have to do much to finish off your painting. If you would like to, however, you can use an acrylic-appropriate varnish to add a sheen and extra protection to your works of art. A layer of varnish will protect your creation from scratches and other damage and make it look beautiful and glossy.

    Begin By Mixing Your Colors

The mixing stage is where your palette and palette knife really get to shine. Most beginner paint sets only have a certain number of colors in them, so mixing the rest and experimenting with different shades is up to you. If you are new to art and color theory in general, then we suggest you make use of a color chart when you first start color mixing. It is best to use your palette knife to mix as your brushes can quickly become a gloopy mess if you use them.

As with everything painting related, experimentation is the key. You only learn by trying new things and figuring out what works best for you.
